my 07 civic with about 27K on it is in need of tires. I'm thinking of Goodyear Assurance TripleTreds. Any comments or experiences are encouraged. Other brand recommendations too.
The car came with bridgestones.

Randy, there used to only be a few brands of tires and considerable differences between the brands. Now we have so many different brands and models that it can get confusing, and lots of the brands are good. However, if you're familiar with the Uniform Tire Quality Grading Standards (UTQGS) you can look on the sidewall for the A, B, C rating for Traction and Temperature Resistance, and a numerical rating for Treadwear. I guess all of the tire manufacturers still have a warranty of some kind of quality, but I don't know of any who include a "road hazard" warranty as they used to do. And while the Treadwear numbers don't actually guarantee any specific mileage, they are quite helpful as a ratio. In other words, one rated at 600 should go twice as far as one rated at 300. And while I don't know of any manufacturers who guarantee any specific mileage (although such may exist), some dealers do. For instance Discount Tire Company (where I buy all my tires) guarantees specific mileage on some (not all) brands and models.

I think Goodyear makes some very good tires and you'll probably be happy with them. Personally, I've had my best luck with B.F. Goodrich tires, so I just in the last couple of months put new ones all the way around on both our Ranger and our Windstar.

Whether you buy from them or not, you might want to go to the Discount Tire Company website and read customer reviews of the tires you're considering.

I've had nothing but good experience from Discount, I'm located in Minnesota. They fix flats for free even on tires I didn't buy from them, I'm not sure if that's corporate policy or I'm lucky, but they've got a customer for life in me.

Put the GY triple treds on an 02 Impala 3/07. Replaced cheapy GY oems. Have about 15K mi on them. Excellent all around performance snow, ice, rain mud. Much firmer handling than oem grade and noisier on expansion strips. Mpg unchanged at 30. The little noise tradeoff for performance is well worth it. Tractor tread strange looks but works well.

Yep, down here in Texas they've fixed flats free for me, too, on tires that were on the vehicles when I bought the vehicle; i.e., tires that I did not buy from Discount Tire. I've been buying tires from them since the late '70s or early '80s. They used to be the cheapest on price and have always been the best on service. This past time I bought tires, I wasn't in any hurry so I did some shopping around. The NTB (National Tire & Battery) store quoted such high prices that I didn't waste much time there. Sears quoted about $6 cheaper for a set of 4 than Discount Tire's price online, and my Ford dealer quoted about $4 cheaper, but when I went to Discount Tire and told them the others were $4 to $6 cheaper, they came down about $30.:D

I bought some Toyo tires awhile back for my van and was pleased with their longevity. I have since installed them on my P/U and also my 24' cargo trailer.
I like 'em!

What type of performance are you looking for. IE, long tread wear usually does not go with a grippy tire. Others work better in wet conditions etc.:D

Bird , This place doesn't have a store in my area but, I have ordered tires from them over the phone & they shipped them UPS to my house. I have a tire machine so, I mounted them myself .Very pleased ! I would order from them again

I have no idea how Discount Tire decides where to put their stores. We have so many it's almost unbelievable. I have one less than 2 miles south of my house, another one just under 4 miles north of my house, and another one nearly 10 miles south of my house. All three are located on I-35E in Denton, Corinth, and Lewisville.

there is no Discount Tire around here. I've read the consumer reviews in several places and the Goodyear came up the best. I'll hit the phone tomorrow. too bad I didn't get but what i did out of the original tires. i commute 120 miles round trip from Jan-Apr and I like that consumer reviews say that these tires are good in icy slushy stuff. there goes $500.

That's about all any of us can do; read what other users have said about a product, pick what sounds best, and hope we're right.:D I suspect you'll be happy with those tires.

Another Discount tire man since they came to texas in the early 80's. REcently went to buy tires and called first to check on the price (about to write a check for a used car that needed tires). The quoted me a price and I said I would be there in an hour. When I got there they only had 3. Two price points up ($25 more each)they had 4 in stock, they brought the price down to the quote. I was out in 45 minutes!!

Interesting info on Discount Tire, private company stilled owned by the guy that started it with 1 store and no air compressor.

Company Overview - Discount Tire Co.

But if a Civic is only getting 27k out of a set of tires I'd have the hardware checked out. Those small cars and small tires have always gone a long way on the compaks I've owned.

Good Luck,
Rob

the people at the honda dealer said that they install soft compound tires on new cars to make the ride softer. they could be bs'ing. but most of what I read about those bridgestones is in line with my experience and they are one of the lowest rated (by consumers) out there. I think the hardware is fine. It gets serviced by the dealer regularly.

I should have added if the wear is flat then maybe there is something to the dealers statement. But still that's not even the warranty period.

I got 50k from a set of BFG in 315 size on my 4x4 f250. 60k on an old Tercel I had years and years ago. What difference in price when changing those 2. I think 1 315 on the truck weighs forty something pounds each!!

I just replaced the GY Triple Treads on my Ion (205/55-16) after approx 75,000 mi. Until these I was never a GY person - overpriced for the life I got out of them. If it would have been summer I would have ran them even longer, but they were not safe for the rest of a Cleveland Ohio winter. The only issue that I can say that I have had with them is the noise level, but well worth it for the traction.

I switched to a set of Yokohama Avid TRZ's that (approx 500mi) seem to be compatible on the traction side (no snow yet), but quieter. The major downfall for these tires appear to be a weak sidewall. They don't respond one with the vehicle during quick maneauvering. During normal driving I have not had a problem with them inflated to 39psi. I will give them about another 1000mi and return them if I decide that I cannot live with that feel. If they go back, it will be another set of GY's.

i called merchants tire and the guy on the phone tried to convince me to get the yokohama avid trz. anyway i don't think you can get H rated yokohama avid trz's in the size you use Kurt. It is the same size I need. The H rating means a stiffer side wall. The price was about the same for both. I will be getting my GY's on wednesday...not at merchants. he GY's are H rated. Thanks for the encouraging post.

Merchant's in my area is the last place I would go for anything. I had 4 tires and a wheel alignment done on a Taurus a few years ago, they had the car for about 5 hours, tried to convince me I needed to replace every component of the brake system (I just needed pads on all 4, yes this Taurus had 4 wheel disks) to the tune of $1500. A female customer was getting her vehicles annual safety inspection, she was charged $35 labor to replace a turn signal bulb, plus $7 for the bulb. If I'm not mistaken, hasn't Merchant's acquired NTB?

Randy,

Thanks. I normally won't buy a tire until I make sure it is exactly what I am looking for. I am hoping to only put 50 - 60k on this set and decided to give them a try based on a recommendation from the tire store since they did not stock the GY's. (I had time to get them and I hate to waste time in the middle of the day.)

With that I will probably take them back and get the GY's although I might forgo the Triple Tread and go with the plain assurance.

Kurt
