Flail Mower Caroni Flail Roller Bearings

That looks like a well thought modification. Would you mind elaborating on the parts that you used to accomplish that?

Also, do you have any detailed photos of your weld points?

Thank you

Ok so here is my fix for my roller problems i just finished it and mowed with it and it perfect at least for now. It acually has a rear dishcharge now and will cut going backwards. and when i cross gravel or asphalt its quiet rather than the rumble of the steel roller crushing gravel. past experiance with bush hog wheels makes me think it will be a while till i have any problems again.View attachment 273109View attachment 273110View attachment 273111View attachment 273112

I received the second bearing. Note that one has a single bearing retainer and the other one has 2 retainers that work independently.
I can read the numbers on the newer set. 2205 and CFC and a J.

ASC is sending me a pair of locally sourced bearings to beta test. That is what I call, excellent service and standing behind the products they sell.

since i last posted on this i have replaced one of the braces on the flail with two chains so i can use my hydraulic top link to give slack so the flail will go in and out of ditches and flex with the contours of the ground better.

Thought I would resurrect & add to this thread as it was very helpful to me.

A few weeks ago I thought I would mow just a little bit further into a section of field & while backing in, inevitably found a very well anchored rock hiding in the grass. The impact was very close to the end of the roller & while the bracket was bent out of shape about 2", the roller itself was just dented.

The bearing on that end was smashed & it was then that I found this thread. With out too much trouble, I was able to find replacement BEARINGS for $13ea, an exact replacement.

I did ordered the grease washers & new circlips from Agrisupply, which were about $2 ea.

Decided to replace parts on both ends of the roller, I am happy to say that the mower is all back together, not too much worse for wear.

I have a Caroni TM1900.

Questions for those of you who have actually replaced the Caroni flail roller bearings. Do I just pry the roller support off, or out, of the bearing race once the roller and both supports are off the flail? And for reassembly, I guess I press in the new bearing into the roller, add the washer, and then the circlip, and then use a rubber mallet to pound the support bracket pin back into the inside bearing race?

Reason I am asking is I have one support separated already, the other is still intact. I am replacing the bearings ONLY because I screwed up and dropped the flail when trying to load it onto a trailer with the FEL, when a strap snapped 5 years ago (yes, I only use chains when hoisting my equipment now). I've been running the flail without the roller for years, actually added guide wheels, but they stick out too far, and I'd like to finally try to get the roller back onto the flail.

Also, I found 2205 bearings with no printed specs for only $6 each, another set with printed load ratings for $29 each, and of course, the Caroni bearings through Agri-Supply for $114 each. Can I trust a $6 bearing without specs over a $29 bearing with printed specs? Are all 2205 bearings made/spec'd the same?

Thanks for any insight.

If the $6 bearing is made in china I would not trust it
SKF OR FAG are some well known bearings Also if you get timken bearing
make sure its not made in china

I found a set of FAG 2205-TVH bearings on ebay for $38 each. They're supposed to be manufactured in Germany, and I could not find any bearings, at any price, with any higher load ratings. The SKFs seem to be manufactured all over, so there was no guarantee I would get the bearings made in Sweden - I saw online complaints that the photos of the bearings said Sweden, but the ones that showed up came from Asia. Trying to minimize Asian content on my Caroni, as I originally decided to pay an extra $1,000 for the Caroni when I bought it, instead of an Asian flail.

I ordered the washers, circlips, and left roller support from Agri Supply. All the bearings I found online had plastic cages, whether they were priced at $25 or $175. The original bearings I pulled out of the roller that were installed by Caroni, had dual metal cages. The original Caroni bearing that wasn't damaged by the drop, seemed to be in perfect condition, and the grease inside still looked new. I decided to replace both bearings, however, and will keep the undamaged original Caroni bearing as a spare. I'm curious to see how long these $38 FAG bearings hold up compared to the original bearings. If they don't hold up, I'll spend the extra on the Caroni sourced bearings, which are currently priced at $114 each.

I deal with this all the time as I have a 1600 and a 1900. You can grease them 'till your "blue-in-the-face" and the bearings will still fail due to the impacts they endure and the fine dirt that gets in. I always keep at least 4 bearings on hand all the time so I can change them when needed. Go down to your local bearing company and get bearing(s) #2205-2RS. These are "self aligning" sealed bearings, you just remove the seals (you don't need them). As for removing the outer race from the roller, there's no way to get behind it because it seats against the shoulder, the easiest way, if you have a mig welder, is to run a series of spot welds around the inside of the outer race, this will cause the race to shrink then you can get behind it with either small "L" shaped pry bar, or in my case, an old screw driver with a bent tip, and pull it out. Install new one using a large socket to seat. If the washer is not destroyed (these are Caroni only parts) re-use it and the circlip.

I got it all put back together. I installed the FAG bearings I found on ebay, and the washers and circlips from Agri Supply along with the new Caroni roller support. Glad to finally have my roller back - I really didn't like the "temporary" gauge wheel setup. The roller bearings were a lot easier tear down and rebuild than I was expecting - I should have looked at it in more detail 5 years ago instead of drilling, and bolting on the gauge wheels, and putting up with those all this time.
The original bearing that wasn't damaged due to the mower drop, was still in excellent condition with perfectly clean grease inside. This mower is 12 years old. That bearing endured 7 years of dry, dusty rocky mountain mowing at 8,500 feet above sea level, before I pulled the roller off in 2019 after damaging the other side. The non damaged bearing is going to get all cleaned up and reassembled as a spare.
