leonz, myself, and others are talking this very question in the big flail mower thread, but I figured I'd kick this one as well, as it contains a lot of good information.

Will keep TBN posted regarding my decision and subsequent experience.

Assume you suggest the recutting bars are desirable? The Woodmaxx units have recutting bars... I am considering the larger FM-96H unit but will not buy until next spring. It appears to be a quality unit but I guess only time will tell. Have you seen any of the larger WM units in person?WoodMaxx FM-96H Flail mower - YouTube

If you have the recutting bars they will help a lot and shear the material smaller on the first pass.

No I have not seen any of the woodmax units in person but if they are on exibited at the Empire Farm Days this year I will look at them extensively and provide an opinion.

Just as a reminder the Vrisimo folks have their 48 inch flail mowers with the scoop knives(formed from flat stock) on sale with a set cost(one price) for shipping from their shops in California nationwide so anyone on the fence should call Vrisimo about them.

Great info fellas. Any updates on the Woodmax? Seems well built to me as well...I the hydraulic offset option is a nice feature. I like quality too, but I could buy a Woodmax, use it for 5 years, sell it for $900, and buy another new one, all for about the same price as one Landpride FM2572. My brain hurts.

I probably won't fire up the Woodmaxx until late June or early July. Just busy with other projects, and confident that the flail can handle the grass at that stage. Will post back here then. But it's been stored outside (on the tractor and resting on 6x6 blocks) all winter, and looks none the worse for wear. Have been doing a lot of FEL work, and the FM-78H has just been my counterweight.

Gotta remind myself how to check the slip clutch, and then soon spin that PTO again.

I have the Woodmax FM62H. Had it for about a year now but haven't used it as much as I'd like up until this point. Initial impression was that is very heavy and heavy duty. Run it on a JD 3025 with the only about 20 PTO HP. My tractor doesn't have a mid PTO and the flail was bought to be a one in all lawn mower and light clearer. With all that I have had going on the last year it has only maybe a dozen or so hours of lawn mowing on it as of yet. It has not taken on consistent brush yet but it has shredded 2-3" downed branches and such with ease. The hydraulic shift is definitely handy in my yard to get around my many obstacles/trees. I ran the hydraulic shift straight to my loader controls. It's pretty nifty but with the plumbing of my loader valve will only run where up and down is left and right, or left is right and right is left.

I have not had any issues with it in its limited use and have been happy with it. It's a definitely overkill for my 1 acre lawn and it was a bit more unwieldy compared the smaller/lighter duty Betstco 42" flail I has running on my previous JD 1023E, but definitely had to up-size tractors for a cabin build project last year. The more I use it the better I get a feel with it though.

Hello and good morning TC33 Abe,

If you have good sod and a thick stand of grass the issue is and will be the quality of cut that YOU want to see and what you want to see from a distance.

Please take the time to visit the entire flail mower thread and look at the cuts made by the various types of flail mowers that we at the Flail Mower Nation use to cut our lawns and or brush.

If you want a finish cut like a golf green or runway a 3 row or 4 row finish flail is what you want to use. you can also use a 2 row flail shredder with Side slicer knives to mow good sod but you will need to mow it at right angle to make sure you clip everything and reduce the waffle cut look with the 2 rows side slicers or with two or three rows of scoop knives.
