Carpenter Bee Season Is ALMOST Here,, My Traps,,

Traps are fun to make but to get rid of Carpenter bees spray Bifen IT once a year on exposed unpainted wood. This works with spiders to. I had a bunch of 15' pines that Carp. bees migrated to and a good spraying took care of them. I didn't have the patience to plug holes up or fool with traps.

Well, it is almost carpenter bee season,, and I had a couple 4X4 posts rot off at ground level,, the rest of the post was perfect.

So, I made these traps out of the old posts,, using ideas I found on YouTube videos.

It turned out that a hole made with a flat blade 1" bit is perfect for a plastic Coke bottle to screw into, and it is a tight fit.

I drill 1/2" holes, which is a perfect match to the natural carpenter bee holes I have measured,,

I put 22 shot cartridges in the Hi- Standard. 12 shot does them in. Great fun too. Hi stud is a single shot with shot shells but there's time to cycle.

I put traps out 3 years ago, had really good control the first 2 years, but for some reason, last year they did not find the traps. No clue why.

So, this year, I plan to spray some permethrin-based product, see how that does.

Indeed, almost time for carpenter bee badminton....always a challenge to see how high they can be popped up! The key is to swing underhanded -- they always see it coming with an overhand or sidehand swing, but are vulnerable from the bottom A trap under the deck near where they like to drill seems to get the rest, have filled the bottle each of the last two years.

Lol...I've even used a broken boat paddle before when a racket wasn't close... A cooler with a few beers a racket makes for some interesting entertainment:laughing:

The reason it works is they see the hole from the outside, they crawl in, see the light (coming up from the bottle) and crawl towards the light to block it off and lay their eggs. Then they fall into the bottle and with the non direct path out, they can't see daylight through the small hole and so they can't get back out.

That's all fine, but how do they pick this little piece of wood when they have a whole garage, shed or barn to choose from?

The drilled hole attracts the bee like a red light works at a house of ill repute,,,
