Case 450 Dozer

Good morning all,
I致e recently purchased a mid 1970s Case 450 dozer with 4 cylinder diesel, and hydraulic 6-way blade.
It appears to have been painted a couple of different shades of yellow/orange over the years, and the serial number tags are missing come to find out.

This makes it a little more difficult to order parts for. Are there any Case equipment experts in here that might be able to help me ID the serial number range for this dozer by any other means?

Nothing yet besides I want to change all the filters and fluids on it etc, and buy the right service manuals etc because they are “before Ser no. XXXXX” and “after ser no. XXXX”

Filters are easy to get at NAPA, that's what I use.

The manual is good to have, but it sure is expensive.

CIH HYtran is now what's recommended for both the tranny and hydraulics...

Can you find PDF manuals on-line?
They are often pirated copies, but exactly the same, and very cheap....$40?

Here is an used OEM service manual for a 450 on ebay. You can buy it now for $49.90 w/free shipping. That's a pretty good deal in my book. I have a couple OEM manuals for backhoes, and they are great. Very descriptive, with lots of images. CASE 45 CRAWLER SERVICE MANUAL | eBay

Parts Store for Case Wheel Loaders, Case Excavators, Case Skid Steers, Case Original Parts. I selected just 450, and it has all of the 450 series listed. Check the early versions near the bottom of the list. Select one, and when the pages open, select "general" in the menu. If you look, it shows where serial numbers are located on the chassis, engine,and transmission. It may at least help you narrow it down the model in a serial number group. It looks like there are 3 different groups of the 450, and some years overlap. Case was great about using apparent part over run, into the next generation, up to a certain serial number. So finding the serial number on the engine & transmission should get you the information you need.

I have a newer and different model Case dozer, so this may or may not help. I go to the Case dealership and talk to the guy who runs the repair shop. He will do just about anything to stop me from bringing my dozer into their shop for him to work on it. He copies dozens of pages of their manuals and gives them to me, he gets their mechanic to go over those pages with me on how to do it myself, and if their are any tricks or special tools needed. The amount of energy and time that they provide me for free is just amazing.

I get the same thing from my car mechanic. Makes me wonder if the job is too small for him, he just likes me and wants to save me money, he dislikes my vehicle so much he never wants to see it again, or it's the fastest way to get me out of his shop? :laughing:

LOL, I've recently also found such a gem.
Small 2 man garage with the owned being very knowledgeable and nt afraid to crawl under.

Type of shop where the guys don't mind being filthy dirty in order to get 'er done.
They don't rely on cart mounted computers to diagnose a simple problem either, just good ole knowledge/experience.
Shucks he lets me provide my on line purchased parts and likes cash.

Also no job is too big or too small.

Nice part is whenever I drop in they all greet me as a as a long lost friend, OK, I have referred a half dozen people for which they are genuinely appreciative.
Being mechanically inclined I appreciate their often clever work around methods to substitute for those pricy SnapOn tools.

This guy recognises what a reputation is worth. One of his guys told me that the majority of their clients actually come from more than 40/50 miles for their service.
I also determined that he does not boost the hours, eg only bills an actual 40/hrs/wk.

Slight downside is that he a bit 'out of the way' but that's a small inconvenience for honest reliable service.
Couple of times he slipped me in simply to diagnose what I felt was an urgency or potential dangerous situation .

Note I like to keep my cars for long times but also well maintained.
My favorite buy is an 'off lease' (3 year) higher end low mileage pre owned vehicle.
Takes time to do that sort of shopping but worth it IMHO over the long haul.
If tomorrow I wish to take an extended long trip I always know that my vehicle won't let me down.
