Case 485 Transmission Problems

That worked for me. Got it back out of being locked in.
Can you tell me GeneP,when the diff. lock is functioning normally, and you step on the pedal, do you have to keep your foot on the pedal to keep it engaged, or is it held in until you make a sharp turn or something else?
What normally releases it? I know it is spring loaded, but just wondering what keeps it engaged.

It is kept engaged by your heel on the pedal. If there is binding in the differential from unequal pressures on the opposite side wheels, it might not return when you release it. Normally just stopping and backing up will release it.

Sounds like I found the expert. Thank you so much for your help.
Like you said earlier, I think the problems are just from lack of use. I got it into 3rd and 4th gears, but it is still pretty stubborn, especially 3rd. Not that we will use it lots, but we do have some 1/2 mile runs, that would be pretty pokey in 2nd.
As for the diff. lock, using it to pull our big wooden dock out for winter, it might be helpful. We are hoping the tractor will do it, otherwise we have to rely on begging/borrowing something big enough to move it.Guess we will find that out come October.

I'm not an expert, but my diff lock was frozen when I got it. I use it frequently and it works easily now.

Run the wheels off your new tractor. Machinery is made to be used.
