I'd imagine cost was a big factor. I have no idea if the newer models are the same. To me it was like learning to operate all over again. and just like doing that, with seat time, you'll smooth things out. I don't use the hoe as much as I did for the first few years I had the 480C and will admit I do have occasional brain farts until I get it together. Heck, sometimes I have a tendency to got back to a 4 stick operation, as mine has the extenda-hoe, and there is a 4th lever. Too many years of watching the hoe, like an extension of the arm/hand, and not really thinking of what you're doing on the hand controls.
