Case DX 29 starting problems

Hello all! I have a 2001 DX 29 that the only way I can get to start is to turn the key all the way to the start position and with a 12 volt test light touch the HM 18 wire(shown on attached drawing) while having the other end to ground. The tractor was not starting at all with the key through the ignition switch, and I just happened to discover this while troubleshooting. I am not sure if I have a ground problem or when I do this if I am bypassing some switches and getting the tractor to start. Not real sure which direction to turn from here? I had borrowed the tractor to someone, ran fine for them and when they brought it back it would not start. I never had any problems with the tractor starting before, other than a dead battery. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Yep, bypassed the safety switches.

Is the PTO lever in the off position?

Could be a wire off or a bad safety switch.

Yes the PTO levers are in the off position.

What you did was bypass the "transmission range neutral switch" i.e. the neutral safety switch and the mid-pto safety switch.

So, I'll ask the obvious: is it in gear? It should be in neutral.

If it's in neutral, and the mid-pto is off, then one of those two switches is bad. To tell which, go to the one that's easier to access and use a jumper wire around the switch to bypass it. Use a jumper wire at least the same gauge as the wiring.

It is also possible somewhere along the line there is a bad ground for those switches, but it's unlikely as usually the switches themselves will fail as they are the moving part.

Thanks for the help guys. It was a faulty Mid PTO safety switch.

Well I thought I had it fixed. I have power to everything now on the R1 relay except no power coming out of the relay on the HM 17 wire, which goes to the starter motor. Any ideas?
