Ive welded a top link bracket of a 1966 Zetor 2011 some years ago. (hay wagon attached while the top link was hanging down, turned too right so the drawbar pushed the toplink aside which broke the bracket) Just Vee'd it, welded a centimeter at a time, then did other work for a minute, welded again, hammered it with the slag hammer (i welded MIG though) and each time let it cool down and distribute the heat before welding another centimeter. It held up perfectly, even with a bouncing 3pt implement at max lift capacity.
That was cast steel, and i didnt have a torch yet. Later i repaired cast iron too, which was also do-able with proper preheating and afterglowing.
