I use Chevron Delo 15W40 in my tractor and truck, 5W30 in our car. All three will be sold here in a few months. The truck has a plethora of problems, none however are engine related. The car has a few issues, but again, none engine related in fact, if anything it has been the engines that are still performing basically as good as new. While there is no doubt in my mind that synthetics are better, my experience from a practical point of view just does not support my need for the higher quality stuff. When I change the oil, I still get that warm fuzzy feeling like I've done something really good for the engine. My guess is that the engine does not even care, it has never shown satisfaction or dissatisfaction. Come to think of it, I've never owned an engine yet that did, but then, I've never owned an engine that failed short of a VW engine where I melted number 3 piston. Perhaps that is all the thanks I need. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Let's get off castrol for now & introduce mobil 1 E.P. This is what I use. For the price vs. amsoil I think its a good oil. If I could afford amsoil I would buy it.

If you follow your owners manual & drain every 3000 mi.you should be ok with their group 3 oil.If you have an oil test done on that oil at 3000 mi. You will find the adds. are all used up.I like the long drains & superior protection of a group 4 synthetic.

AMSOIL Man here !!

I just replaced my Tractor oil with Amsoil 3000 series 5W30. My tractor just loved it !! Now everytime I go into the barn my Dynamo Hummm just won't leave me alone. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

In the early '90s we saw several sludged engines with regualr Castrol oil changes. This was do to the parafin concentration in Castrol oil. It has since been reformulated and I have not heard of any issues. Ooil can definitly cause engine failures.

With that said, I dont buy into the "synthetic" mystique. If you follow the proper intervals and monitor viscosity as it is removed as well as build up inside the cover, you'll be fine. The grade and certification are what is important. Make sure it meets the MFG spec's and change it regularly. If it makes you feel warm and fuzzy to pay $5 per quart, have at it. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gifTalk about falling into marketing traps.... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif When it is provenn that I can get more mileage out of my engines by using this stuff, I might. I'm satisfied knowing that though I abuse the intervals a bit with cheap oil, I can regularly get 150,000+ miles before I sell a good runing vehicle. All of my current vehicle have 160,000+mi on them and I wouldne hesitate to drive them across country. Cheap oil rules.... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Every MFG has their own gimmic. "Syntec" was Castrols. If you chemicly modify the compounds, it is syntheticly altered. All about perception. We can all read the same book and come up with a different meaning behind it.

The oil racers use is most definitly dependant on who sponsers them. Kind of funny that John Force is one of the most winning Funny Car drivers, its a wonder he finishes the 1/4mi with Castrol all over the car, not to mention in it. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The fake Group III isocracked pseudosynthetic Castrol Syntex only lasted < 2,000 miles in my high performance motorcycles before it is so degraded and sheared it is no longer any good (transmission and crankcase share same oil).

However, with Group IV PAO Amsoil 10W-40 I easily get 6,000 to 7,000 miles between changeouts making the Full Synthetic much "cheaper" and way way better. My digital oil thermometer also shows an immediate 20*F reduction in oil temperature using the Synthetic compared to the dino.....

Of course, KTM's highly detailed engineering manual states to use only 10W-60 Shell Ultra Group IV PAO Full Synthetic in their engines, but that high quality motor oil is 100% unobtainable here in North America... /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
