Cat 299d

we have takin nearly all the good parts off the takeuchi so now it would not be a good donor for the transplant. When we get a newer machine to replace our takeuchi in use, i am planning to stick a 130-150hp 4cyl and a dedicated pump that would be similar to the sk120...maybe alittle more.

i think the takeuchi frame is one of the most dependable, and i am working on steel track converting it, if its not too much i will do it. we need one with rubber tracks and one with steel.

We have a 299c and we had a triple flange back roller installed from cat and it made a world of difference keeping the tracks on. As for the price I would guess it could be had for around 80k. After really wheeling and dealing we got a high flow 299c for about 72k last fall. Be persistent. Caterpillar is 100 times better than bobcat for support. We had to turn our air intake tube to suck air from straight above the engine because it would plug up with sticks, leaves, and corn stalks all the time.

I think this is based on the dealer in your area. My experience has been that CAT corporate and Bobcat Corporate both do a good job in addressing issues but ultimately the dealer and its ocal service department make or break support. I've owned a JD dozer, CAT skidsteers and attachments, and many Bobcat machines and attachments and I can definitely say they all have their pros and cons when it comes to support.

I'll second that good point we bought two challenger mt535 in 2008 and a challenger mt 285 from Yancey cat in Georgia great service and they drove to mobile al to work on them in 2010 Yancey give up the challenger line and we've tried everyone else around that are challenger dealers and had nothing but crap for service.

If your gonna use Cat 299D XHP in woods, I would rethink mulching with it, the new regeneration system has potential of catching fire if there is any debris in machine, they designed a shelf right behind the regeneration system. This has happened in the middle of winter, in summer when mowing and being in grass it will even be more risky, only the D has the regeneration system. My machine is less than a month old and this has already caught fire, it also kicks track 1-4 times per day, even at maximum tension. Bobcat is not quite as powerful but it is built heavier, no problems with fire and track is 1 a week not every day. Cat needs to step up game to play in woods.

Do u have the forestry kit on your 299d xhp? I haven't had to clean my engine bay since I had mine it's sealed up tight. As far as the tracks mine has thrown once but under the circumstance any machine would have threw it only had one way in to the job down a steep hill into a ditch bout 3 foot wide then had to do a 90 degree turn. Didn't throw it all the way just jump over the center front idle pull to the outside one easy fix. Since they put the triple idlers wheelse up front and on the bogies it helps out alot.

there is a fix on the NLC range of serial numbers to aid in keeping the tracks on. TimberMulcher, are your running a debris kit on your machine? if not then the fire issues is not bad design but the owner of the machine failing to properly equip for the job. with a properly installed kit the machine will be very clean compared to any MTL of any brand when mulching. i have personaly set up two identical DXHP machines with custom fabricated debris kits before the Cat kit was available....... both machines have a light dusting of chaff and dust in the engine compartment and the air cleaner and coolers are clean......
