People try to compare to dogs.

That is like comparing a fish to a hamster.

Totally different vibe/interactions and tendencies

Yes!

My experience:

- the cat won’t drink day old water. He looks at me and meows until I change the water in his bowl.

The dog will drink 4 day old rain water from a hole in the gravel.

- the cat requires his food in a silver bowl and none of the bottom of the bowl can be seen (seriously)!

The dog will eat anything anywhere irrespective of the age of the food.

- the cat often cleans and grooms himself.

The dog seeks out the worst smelling areas of the grass and shoulder rolls in the gunk.

- when gone most of the day and you return home, the cat looks at you annoyed, turns around and gives you the cold shoulder.

The dog acts like you’re the greatest thing in the world, runs to you, wags tail and is truly happy.

- Once I tried to walk the cat. Bought a harness and leash. He laid on the ground and would not move. He stayed there for an hour. Wouldn’t move until I removed the harness,

The dog will walk on his leash day, night, rain, snow, tornado or hurricane.

But I love them both.

I had a black Persian cat save my life...or at the least a very serious burn.
This is the same cat "Rena" who drank from our water fountain by holding the knob and held it for her mother to drink.
I had started a business and had to be frugal. I would stay after closing lots of times working all night many times and Rena was "the shop cat". One winter night (I kept thermostat at 60° to save money) and ran an electric heater going where I was. About 2 a.m. I laid on the floor, back to heater and had on a jacket. I fell asleep.
An hour or so later I awoke because something was pounding my chest. Then I saw Rena, she would be across shop floor and ran full speed hitting me with all 4 feet in the chest, go back and do it again. That's when I realized my jacket was on fire! I quickly ripped it off putting fire out.
We've had some very smart cats over the years!

This one, Cathy, adopted me shortly after I got this new (to me) place. She's responsible for hundreds of killings, and has about 20,000 miles on her as I did bi-weekly 1,000 mile trips between here and the old house for a while.

That started in '09, and thankfully she's still with us. Just retired from hunting.

When you find the right one, you'll know right then and there! They will change your thought about a cat with the right one. I have my e and a Miniature Dachshund also. The younger guys play with the dog. Couldn't be without them!

My experience:

- the cat won’t drink day old water. He looks at me and meows until I change the water in his bowl.
This time of year I don't water my cats. They can fend for themselves. Although when we had freezing rain a couple of days ago I had to break the ice off of some water tubs, and considered giving them a bowl inside. In the summer they do get a water bowl.
- the cat requires his food in a silver bowl and none of the bottom of the bowl can be seen (seriously)!
Odd they don't like eating to the bottom of the bowl, but they will. I usually just feed a bucket at a time. Free fed. Sometimes a couple of days worth of food.
Dogs, on the other hand, would become blimps if given all the food they could eat.
- when gone most of the day and you return home, the cat looks at you annoyed, turns around and gives you the cold shoulder.
It may depend on the cat. Latte (Tortie in the Caterpillar page 5) will call to me if she sees me walking towards the house. Or if I sit for a minute in the pickup I'll hear a thump on top which is her coming to be petted. She can be very aggressive at getting petted.

Other cats seem to wake up when they see me. Not as aggressive to get petted, but they will come
- Once I tried to walk the cat. Bought a harness and leash. He laid on the ground and would not move. He stayed there for an hour. Wouldn’t move until I removed the harness,
I've tried it. Not particularly successful.

However, I have one kitten that has taught himself to heel.

Ok, so cat heeling is a little different than a dog heeling and the cat will be right on top of my heel, or perhaps between the legs, or in front of the legs. Somehow not smart enough to know how not to get stepped on. I've meant to try halter training him. That'll be an interesting experiment.
