IMHO there was nothing wrong with that 5000. We had a JD 3020 that the injector pump went haywire and was letting the engine run away. When i got to it the tach was at about 3200rpm normal limit was 2500. Moving throttle to shut down postiton did nothing so just put in high gear and stand on brakes shut it right down.

I'm not qualified to answer up regarding the clutch reducing starter load. Maybe one of the smart mechanical types can comment

Are you forgetting the Bug and Minot days Pat? Probably got more education there in a month than many see in a lifetime!:p

Sound guy, it seemed to be a tough girl. The clutch was fine when the engine was replaced and it had been shut off like that for 15 years or so. In 8th the brakes have quite a mechanical advantage over the engine. If you accidentially tried to stall it in low it just over powered them.

I remember trying to get stopped on the highway on the 5000 with an empty wagon in a hurry and I left 50 ft of rubber in a heartbeat. I was trying to turn into a side road at the time and I was heading in the no power steering direction.

It's always an un-fun moment having to make a panick maneuver and the equipment is not cooperating.

I remember when i ran out of PS fluid going down the road. ( loose cap on sump.. my fault.. I checked befroe leaving and didn't get it tight... )..

had enought fluid to get out in traffic and THEN it started steering like a bear!

steering brakes helped... was almost a 'brown alert' moment!
