there are no adjustments on those old carbs, unless you suspect the float setting has changed someway. Any mixture screws, just set 1 1/2 turns out to start and adjust for best performance, (any carb).

akjohnston,
Check out this site Ford 9N, 2N & 8N Discussion Board
it is all about 8n & 9n tractors. Do a search on carb adjustment and you should find what you need. There are a lot of knowledgeable people that are glad to share it with others.

I have no idea what problems you are having, but the ignition coil is often a problem that acts like a carb problem. Check out the site and good luck.

As already stated, 1.5 turns open to start. Then adjust idle screw, the small one, for best idle. Years ago the family 2N usually was fine with 1.5 turns on the power jet needle. We sometimes used 1/4 turn more for very heavy work or 1/4 turn less for piddle work - if we felt the need.

Classic... First sentence says there are -NO- adjustments. Second sentence procedes to tell how to "adjust" the down pointing mainjet ( OUT to enrich ) and the side pointing idle air mix ( in to enrich ).. ( this assumes a MS carb like the tsx 33 / 241 variants.. etc.. )

wonderfull...

If you can adjust ANY carb, you can adjust an 8N. Have a nice day soundguy:rolleyes: .

Norm.. My point was.. you contradicted yourself in your message.. you said they can't be adjusted.. then told how to adjust... right?

I was assuming he meant anything specific to the 8N carb. I believe you are obsessing over this forum, soundguy.

Hmm... I also was assuming he was asking just that.. I.E. Specifically How do I adjust this (8n) carb... That's a pretty straight forward question.. doesn't need much interpretation to determine what he was asking.. IMHO.

Obsessing? Hardly. Sarcasm? yes. I felt your 2 part answer of "no" and then 'instructions' was uh.. incongruent.

I try to think of the archival purpose of these messages and questions. Down the road someone searching for instructions on how to adjust their ( 8n ) carb may hit that message, read the first line of the response indicating no adjustment.. then move on.. bewildered.

And obsessing over this forum? As I said.. I was sarcastic in the reply in this thread.. but have hardly breezed over most of thre new messages in the entire forum / sub. ..??

This reminded me of about 5 years ago.Neighbor purchased a 9N that smoked like a train. Then came to me to adjust his carb. the engine appeared worn out but he said it had been rebuilt and could see between the rust and dried grease a copper head gasket. disassembled the carb. and some one had put in a large washer to restrict the air flow and this was causing the fully choked condition, went ahead and rebuilt carb with kit. still need work on ignition so rebuilt the dist. new plugs wires then checked the timing the compression almost none. Told him that the pistons were swapping holes faster than the spark plugs could keep up.He returned tractor to seller and told him what I had said this and the Mechanic/seller called me on this since knew him we had a laugh, but I learned to be careful of comments to neighbors they will accept any thing as truth.
The tractor hasn't been seen again so he sold it to some one else.

I repainted dads 8n in 2002 the carb was rebuilt when we put it back together it would not start i took the carb off and cleaned it the second time .Then i found a little jet left over in the rebuid kit it went in the bottom of the float bowl i when i replaced it the jet one had a speck of rust in the center of the jet .The tractor had more power and ran slick before it would spit and cough some of the time . The jet looked to small to matter .The funny thing is since 1952 dad has a good selection of old carbs for the 8n and his old jubalee. He always just bought a new one.He had me to adjust it at fast idle till it ran smooth then alittle while running the tractor till it smoothed out and had good power.
