For those of you who own and use a cd drive, and I think ALL of you do. Be sure to point the computer case away from where you sit. Last night, while loading software (in this case HP 935C software), my cd drive startled the heck out of me with a very loud POW! , pieces of it and the cd disk blew across the room, some striking me in the side. It evidently snagged the disc, which blew apart into hundreds or more small pieces, blowing the faceplate off the cd drive, and snapping the tray door off as well.
Not a nice thing to happen, and very glad that I sit forward of its explosive path. New one on me!

I don't think Apple software does that, Scruffy.

Probably shouldn't be joking 'cuz it sounds like you might easily have been hurt. Now I'm not sure what to do since one of the kids' computers has a built-in CD-Rom drive right below the built-in monitor.

Why am I always saying, "glad you're okay"?

I knew these contraptions were dangerous in a lot of ways, but that's one I never heard of before./w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif

Now, Scruffy, you know you left out a very crucial detail. I understand why you did, but it's still not being honest, is it? How many times have I told you not to use the CD drive tray as a cupholder? /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Oh yeah, I almost forgot: I sure am glad you weren't hurt! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Actually Scruffy, if it's a relatively new CD (or DVD) drive, they spin the CD up at several times the "regular" CD speed (45x on some models), so it may have just been a CD that had a fracture, or some manufacturing defect, and couldn't handle the stress. I've never seen it happen, but I've heard of it. I know it can happen, the DVD drive on my PC spins up something fierce when it's reading a disc. You can sure tell when one is a little out of balance /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif; it vibrates and humms like mad.

Glad you weren't hurt.

Dang..glad there weren't any children around and your okay.
Wonder if they put warning on the cd drives that this could happen...yikes.

Don't install the CD for the new Kubota 2002 tractor line up,for most computer will catch fire...there hot. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Scruffy,

Kevlar vest and face shield are the only way to go.

Just think of memos and meetings generated if this would have happened in the work place of a large corporation. The safety deptartment could feed for at least a year.

Thanks for the sentiment guys!
I think in my case, I am going to move the case off the desktop, and onto the floor....I have a new full tower case that was bought for a new system, but I think it will be utilized much sooner.
Don't know about the Apple software thing, as this printer was the first color inkjet designed for the Mac's, and Windows OS. The install cd is the same for both....now what does that say?
GlueGuy, I'd probably agree that the cd had a hairline fracture, and yes it was a 6-7 month old 48X cdrom player. there was no sound other than the typical spin up 'whir', and rather lightly at that.
I sure would be hesitant to sit directly in front of one ever again! Don't think so Harv! Once was enough on that experience, and I sure would hate to see anyone directly in front when one lets fly like that!

Oh Oh

If mine detonates like that I am going to be short of a couple of friends between my legs !!

Better go easy on the CD drive !!!

Cheers

Neil, I'm with you on this. Soon as I read this, I looked down at the mid-tower, under my monitor, in the corner of my cube. Fortunately I use the CD rarely, but the self disintegration would be aimed in an inconvenient location for the 'boys'.

Same thing (sorta) happened to me (amazing that I am pulling a thread BACK to tractors). Wheel Horse lawn tractor, friction plate clutch coming off the side of the Kohler engine. Clutch disk blew apart at full RPM. I was about 12 at the time, that stung.
