I am purchasing a GC1723EB and had a few questions about the backhoe. While test driving it I noticed that the backhoe was unable to move the boom and dipper at the same time. You could only do one or the other. I spoke to the salesman about it and he said these small tractors don’t produce enough gpm’s. I was curious if any of you all have noticed this, or is it a malfunction?

That is the way my 2310 is; I believe they are all that way... one motion at a time.

Hmmm, I’d have to actually go operate mine to answer that question, accurately.

What I can say is this, in probably 300 hours of backhoe operation, between my 1710 and now the 1723, I have never noticed that as a cause of slow work.

I have a 2015 GC1710TLB with the CB65 and I can run 2 functions at once, albeit slowly at higher RPM's as I need the full GPM's to do it. I suspected it would be a bit faster for a GC1720 as they have a .5 higher GPM flow. One thing is for sure...they're no mini ex lol

Yes let me know what you find please. I’m thinking once you have more experience (I’ve got about 5 mins of backhoe experience....no lie) you have a much better feel and subconsciously know what your hoe can and can’t do.

I appreciate your response I believe I was experiencing the same thing. Me not having any experience made this the first thing I noticed when I jumped on it.

Depending on how you control it, you usually have enough fluid to operate two functions at a time. Because, you are not usually opening the valves all the way.

As said, it's not an excavator. But, it is probably capable of digging faster than the average owner can control it. If you are experienced enough to dig at full throttle, it can move along pretty fast.

You do have to use any compact digger differently than commercial construction equipment. Aside from the limited amount of fluid flow, they simply don't have the weight to resist the movement of the machine when you are digging hard ground, or lots of roots. That means, sometimes you have to use a different technique, which involves breaking the ground by using more curling of the bucket, rather than just ripping, by pulling the bucket through the ground.

With a competent operator, these machines are capable, and smooth operating. And, more than adequate to do what they are designed for.

Considering that they cost a fraction of the cost of commercial equipment, I am quite pleased with mine.

Yup, they are quite capable. It took most of the 300 hours or so to become proficient, but they will do a lot of work, like Ray said, once your good at it.

I don't have my backhoe on the tractor now, but pretty sure I could move both at the same time, though both suffer speed if doing it together...which is good sometimes. Often times I'll do stuff like curl bucket will raising boom strictly to keep the boom from jerking up.

If I am throttled up on my 1720 I have enough flow.

I rarely operate it at that level though, most of the time I am in the 1.8-2k RPM range. Just an old habit that I don’t run my equipment at heavy load unless I just absolutely have too..

The Backhoe has plenty of capability and will dig up any stump or make a hole that I need it too. Honestly the little tractor will do the work of any large tractor, but you wil need to take your time.

I agree here. I use my hoe at about 2k....maybe 2500 if I really want the extra speed but I prefer to be just a hair slower and more accurate in my work rather than wrecking stuff.

This 140' trench was dug on my GC, with a 6" bucket, straight, exactly 2' deep, and a flat bottom, at full throttle.

I also loaded the spoils into a small garden dump cart, as I dug.

And believe me, it's more difficult to dig a clean, straight trench with a 6" bucket.

But, it is possible.

I can run more than one function at a time...practice, practice, practice.

You guys rock. Thank you for all of the info. 300 hours to consider yourself proficient. I can’t wait to say that I am “proficient with hoes”

You'll be big pimpin' the backside of that massey in no time. :D

It took me a while to just not have a bucking bronco. Did a stump Saturday and was able to keep the tractor from drifting too much. It does take a lot pf practice to be smooth, but going slow and thinking through your motions makes it possible to do quite a lot. Have fun, dig a trench or dig a stump and you will see that you improve pretty quick, To see 300 hours to be proficient makes sense, but to be able to do most of you work, takes a lot less time. I have 55 ours and have done trenches and stumps galore, so just take it slow and stay safe and you'll be using the BH really well in no time.

What Ken said....when I say proficient, I mean I don’t have to think about it anymore, it’s second nature. And yes you will slam it around for awhile when you start out, that means your going to fast, lol.

Lol, I was proficient with hoes, then I got married, wanted to keep it up, so I got this hoe. Costs less then the other kind, when your married...ha

I had a old woods 650 backhoe attachment. My 1710 with CB 65 is so much smoother. It is really fun to use.
It would be nice if it did two functions at once faster. I am always pleasantly surprised how much it can do.
