Cedar Closet ?\'s

I am going to line the closets in my log home with red cedar, but I have a problem. I have never used cedar before and don't know how to finish it. I am going to use 3/4x8 t&g that will need to be sanded smooth. Do you use any finish on the cedar such as an oil or something? Polyurathane would seal in the cedar smell so thats out. The prefinished stuff that comes in little boxes looks like it has a finish on it. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

It confirms what I have always heard and practiced. Do not seal cedar is you want aroma to be present.

Hi Deer. No finish at all. In fact if you sand the surface very smooth, thoroughly vacuum the surface to optimize the "cedar smell."

Eventually, the cedar smell will lessen. When this happens with a cedar closet or cedar chest, a light sanding will renew that brand new cedar smell. Wish I had a log home to install some cedar closets in. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Do not finish it with anything. Use eastern red cedar. Western cedar will not work. If you want it to effectively keep moths away, you need to make the closet as airtight as possible.

If you want to make cedar look finished, you can rub it with a rounded maple stick and burnish in a shine, but this closes some of the pores which generate the smell by evaporating the oils.

When the smell dies off in a few years, a light sanding will bring the smell and the moth repellant capabilities back.
