Cedar siding question for new barn

Use oil based stain like Cabots- semisolid or solid (bright sun). Stain is great- no scraping ever, years from now just apply another coat. Water clean up stain is lousy and sits on the surface of the wood, can peel in damp areas. Oil based stain sinks into the wood.

Keep the wood dry, roof overhangs, no place for water to sit and seep in, etc. I like shiplap, more substance than clapboards. Cedar is nice, but pricy.

Do you buy them or make them that way?

I'm in process of building a new barn. I'm looking at white pine vs cedar siding. I know cedar is better but limited supply in Ohio I think. Anyone know the cost to have siding shipped in and is it worth it over white pine? Thinking of doing board and batten or just using a vertical 6 or 8" channel lock version. Barn will be 10' high and 40x70 with 12' shed.

Thank you

Have you given any thought to vinyl cedar shakes. You cannot tell the difference between the vinyl ones and real wood. Price competitive also. Cedar Shake Vinyl Siding by The Foundry

Two other options.

HARDI board, which is a cement 8" board comes 12' long and can be used ala clapboard or vertically a la board and batton. Never any rot and totally fireproof. Easy to stain but available pre stained as well.

CANEXEL, many choices both vertical and horizontal and many colors. Another excellent product.

Both products look like real wood and are extremely durable and IMHO very nice cost effective products.

You won't be able to buy oil-based siding stains in a few more years, in fact many of the companies are already phasing it out of their product lines. I have no idea what's behind this (EPA I imagine) but I have now run across three manufacturers pushing water-based and phasing out oil-based.

Historically I have preferred oil-based, but the water-based stuff I am using from S-W is penetrating very well. Almost too well -- I have to be real careful about overlap strokes.

Do the folks who installed or are considering installing wood siding not have carpenter bees?

I have them here. Staining/painting the wood (especially a color that is not a natural wood color) helps deter them. But I also stay on top of things and don't let them get established around my home. Once they get going, it will get worse every year.

Maine- no carpenter bees, just carpenter ants! For the last 10-12 years they have been phasing out oil based stuff. Last Cabot I bought was oil based- one reason I buy from them. If there is a water based product that soaks in- that's great!

Where's the barn, is it done or is it still in the building process, when I was building my garage, sometime it felt like I was building a barn, now that its done I have to go back to the honey do list this summer
