One more thing that will make the breaker trip at times. If your condenser fan motor is worn many times it will run for a while until it overheats and then it will cut off for a while until it cools off and comes back on.
When it shuts off the compressor will overheat, pull more amps and kick the breaker. By the time you notice that the breaker has kicked off and turn it back on, the fan motor has cooled down and comes back on. Since your indoor fan motor is still running you don't notice that the outdoor one has shut off.
This situation is instantly noticed on a window unit when the fan motor shuts off because there is only one motor for the condenser and the evaporator but since the central has 2 motors people frequently don't notice when the outside fan motor shuts off.
