One more thing that will make the breaker trip at times. If your condenser fan motor is worn many times it will run for a while until it overheats and then it will cut off for a while until it cools off and comes back on.

When it shuts off the compressor will overheat, pull more amps and kick the breaker. By the time you notice that the breaker has kicked off and turn it back on, the fan motor has cooled down and comes back on. Since your indoor fan motor is still running you don't notice that the outdoor one has shut off.

This situation is instantly noticed on a window unit when the fan motor shuts off because there is only one motor for the condenser and the evaporator but since the central has 2 motors people frequently don't notice when the outside fan motor shuts off.

We just had one of our heat pumps start blowing hot air, it is a GMC and is 6 yrs. old. I called the AC guy and it was a capacitor...He was here for about 30 minutes and the bill was $160.00 and everything works fine now....I think your guy is high.

Our AC stopped working last week. Looking things up on the Internet it seemed like the problem was the capacitor. I found a website that listed a range of prices for HVAC work. The high end cost for a capacitor was $165.

Ours is a Goodman unit as well.

The HVAC guy show up early and mine was the capacitor as well. It is also 6 years old. I paid $165 but the guy had to go and get the capacitor.

Later,
Dan

Yep, no doubt you got taken.

IF they are a reputable HVAC company, they should make it right with you.

If they are a fly-by-night company, you should still try. None-the-less, I think you need to give them a call. Because when it all comes down to it, you hired him and paid him $500 to fix the problem. Only he didnt fix the problem.

It would be different if you hired him to replace parts, but again, you hired him to fix the problem. He is supposed to be a trained professional. If he mis-diagnosed it and replaced parts that werent bad, that should be on his dime, not yours.

Here is a link to a chart of the current carrying capacities of wire sizes.
Wire Amps
Use the first for UF and TW.
So a #8 is good for 40 amps(use a 40 amp breaker).
#6 is good for 50 amps(use a 50 amp breaker). This is assuming that your run is less than 100'.

The unit should state on the rating plate ( mod # ser.# plate)the max & min breaker size. If you are an auto tech. You know how we feel when we take our vehicle in for repair;). Maybe you have worked on 1 of his vehicles at some point & he felt he needed to get some of his $$ back:D
