Century 2028
Well me and my son were moving some equipment this morning and I told him to back up to a roller I made....and the clutch won't release. Makes it real difficult to move a tractor if you can't get it in gear....Anyone else with this problem? Don't know what to do now...The dealer I bought the tractor from dosen't sell Centurys any more /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

If the tractor has been sitting for a while (not being used), it is possible that the clutch is corroded or frozen--stuck. If that is the case, you can sometimes get them to release by putting the tractor under a heavy load while depressing the clutch pedal until it breaks free. (ie:push or pull against a tree)
If that is not the problem, it could be in the linkage, somewhere between the pedal and the clutch itself.
Either way, the dealer you bought it from should still be able to fix it --even if it is still under warranty, and he is no longer a Century dealer.

I guess I should add, that to get it in gear, you should put the main shift lever and the range lever in low and leave the shuttle lever in neutral, start the tractor, then vary the engine rpm's at the throttle until the shuttle lever slips in gear (without using the clutch) . Be ready to kill the engine to stop it ,though.

With your engine OFF and your wheels chocked, get your son to step on the clutch while you are underneath the tractor. You should be looking to see if the clutch linkage is operating all of the way into the transaxle/frame assembly. If the linkage only moves to a point OUTSIDE the assembly, then your problem is: linkage, pins, connections. If the linkage moves all of the way into the assembly, then, it could be: clutch fork/ throw out bearing, clutch, pressure plate. Happy hunting /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif. Franz

Thanks for all the input....I use my tractor every week-end; so I don't think that it's froze up and the linkage moves up to where it goes into the case. The weird thing is that it feels like the PTO clutch is working but not the transmission clutch...In any event I took it back to the dealer and they're working on it...Now the only thing that disturbs me is they told me it might not be a "warranty" fix....I don't see why seeing how I haven't had the tractor a full year yet.
On another note...Does all of these compact tractors seem like they're going to blow up if the engine is run at PTO speeds?

I know that engines sound differently while under a load at higher rpms than say one run at 2400 rpm and no load. Does it sound like it will come apart under a load? It will be interesting to see how the 2 year bumper to bumper and 1 year parts on engine and drive train warranty pans out. Keep us all informed.. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
