I have inherited a Century AC/DC stick welder similar to this. It however has no cables or manuals,.... How can I get started? Where can I get a manual, or cables,....? I think Century has been bought out by Lincoln, but can't seem to find the info there. The other difficulty I have, is that I am a welding novice (ok, whats less than novice) : ) and don't know the bits and pieces that should come with it.

Thanks for the help,
Rob

problem solved, I called Lincoln Electric, and they are sending me a manual by email.

I see your manual is in the mail. As far as cables, You need to look in your phone book for a welding supply store. You will need 2 cables made up with crimp ends on one end that attach to the machine. I crimped and soldered mine. (I'm guessing the cables bolt on to 2 studs on the front of your welder). Your manual will tell what size cable to use. On the other ends you'll need a ground clamp on one and a welding rod holder on the other. Buy a good welding helmet. I prefer the auto darkening type so you don't have to flip it down. Welding gloves and jacket should be next. A fire extinguisher for safety. Chipping hammer and rod. I use an assortment depending on the job such as 6013, 7018, 6011, and 316L if you do stainless. I usually buy 3/32" dia. Lastly take a basic welding course if your not familiar with welding.

Thanks for the great response. How did you crimp the ends onto the cable, in a vice, or do you have a special tool?

Thanks,
Rob

I had to put an end on a welding cable and they sold me a terminal that had a 'bump" on one side of the barrel. You stripped the cable and slipped it into the barrrel. Then you put the terminal on a hard surface and pounded the "bump" until it was flush with the rest of the barrel. This drove the barrel down around the cable to make the connection. Hammer on lug

Didn't look as pretty as a factory installed terminal, but worked fine.

A full service shop may have the tools to install the terminals, or sell cables in a specific length with terminals installed.

Sorry I havent been on for a few days to respond. I have a manual crimp tool for battery cable ends. Kinda like a v-block with a puch on top that slides. Just lift the punch, insert cable with crimp fitting and smack down with hammer. After that I heated in with a torch and flowed solder into the crimped fitting.

My FIL was a union welder for about 30 years. George did a great job with his advice. The only thing I might add is for you to talk to a couple of welders in your area and find out where the best welding supply shop is near you. Go there and explain your situation. They will generally bend over backwards to help you out, because they are developing a customer relationship that will last them years. Good luck with your welder, I am envious.
