I went by my local Century dealer today and looked at a 2535. I decided it wasn't enough tractor for my purposes. The dealer told me about the name change from Century to Zetor and he had a small booklet with the specifications for the Zetor 38L that will replace the 3035/3040. Its a 4 cylinder 127 c.i. normally aspirated diesel with 36 net and 32 pto h.p. All the other specifications are really close to the 3035/3040 Century. Does anyone know if the 4 cylinder engine is the Cummings or a smaller version of the Yanmar? Any info appreciated.

leroy,

the label on the motor will actually indicate kukje as the manufacturer, same as the rest of the tractor. having said that, there have been several entries on this forum indicating cummins had some involvement in manufacturing or design.

chipperman is the resident expert, he will likely know more details.

It's a Cummins design without the Cummins label. As the Cummins motors start filling out the product line, you will see some slight changes in model numbers.

People have an interest in this motor, but I will say that we have never had any problems with the Kukje engines, and we've sold a lot of them. I'm not sure how the Cummins could be any better really.

The "A" series Cummins built by Kukje are:

A900 @ 18HP, A1400 @ 31HP, A1700 @ 37HP, A2000 @ 45HP, A2300 @ 50HP (engine used in the 4720), and the A2300 turbo @ 60HP. These are rated at 2800rpm, Kukje generally uses a 2600rpm rating as that is more fair (considering PTO speeds) so figure about 5% less in the tractors.

Thanks for the info, I thought the engine was the one being discussed on the boards. Do you know how long this engine has been in tractor service? I am always a little cautious about buying the first year anything.

The engine is new in tractor service, but extremely thoroughly tested. Cummins sets a high mark for quality.

Hello Gentleman (and Ladies?)
Been on the road and had no internet access last night. Looks like Dave has taken care of things (thanks Dave). One thing I will add is it will be a little while before you see the C38L’s ship. There are still plenty of 3035's available though. (Current Century model)
Good luck and
Happy Tractoring

If an engine is completely new...or major changes to the major parts like head, block, crank, fuel system.... your concern may be correct. In these cases...it may typically take a yr or yr and half for mfg to work out all the issues. Trust me, every manufacturer has quality issues...just some have less repairs per hundred than others. Also, different customers have different applications and duty cycles...some of which are severe and may not be matched correctly to the engine ....which can result in more warranty claims. Having said that though....sometimes the new engines come out beautifully from the get-go. In the case of the kukje/ cummins.... you have the basic kukje engine with the added expertise of Cummins engineers working with Kukje engineers to make these tierII compliant. I wouldn't be worried at all. Most of us are weekend warriors, and never put our tractors thru what I'd call severe usage.

Dave- Correct me if I'm wrong , but has'nt Cummins had this engine in power unit service for a while? Like maybe a year before we started seeing it in tractors?

Chuck,

Yes I think you are right, the Cummins "A" have been out for about 18 months or so in stationary applications.
