2003 Kubota BX-22
Henro told me a while ago that he got a Manufacturers Certificate of Origin from his selling dealer that came from Kubota. When I purchased my tractor, the dealer said that Kubota didn't offer them and the bill of sale from him was all that was needed. Being familiar with motor vehicles, I thought that this was strange, but I accepted this on face value. I called the dealership today, and they said it was available by request only from Kubota. The question is, did your dealer supply you with the Kubota Certificate of Origin (CO0) for your tractor when you purchased it? I don't know of any other way that you could prove ownership beyond the dealers bill of sale, and that, if lost might be hard to replace. If you have a manufacturers certificate of origin, you can take that to your motor vehicle department and have it converted into a title that would be recorded. If a $300 tow behind trailer comes with a COO, why not a $15,000 tractor??? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

As best I can figure, a COO is "normally" used for vehicles that get registered/titled. A bill of sale is used for most anything else.

I've never tried to title anything that didn't get registered. Personally, I'm sick of having to register the vehicles I have now.

Actually, the Kubota RTV I got this year came with a bill of sale only. I had to use that to get it registered (yes, we need license plates on all UTV's and ATV's) and titled.

Update..... I called Kubota today and was informed that the dealers can request the Certificate of Origin from their district office by supplying the tractor serial number. Then the COO will be mailed to the dealership for them to fill in your name and transfer this to you. You then take the certificate to the motor vehicle department and have a title issued. This will prove your ownership and in the event of theft, it will be able to be added to the Federal registry of stolen vehicles, insuring that if it is found, that you will be notified in a timely manner. Even if you never title the tractor, you will still have a permanent piece of paper proving ownership if the dealership ever closes beyond the bill of sale.

Did you happen to inquire as to whether this process can take place if you're not the original owner?

I have been able to title 2nd hand vehicles in the past using only a receipt from a seller. A little scary since anyone could have made the receipt but if you attach a check, the government doesn't seem to care. EDIT - Am I allowed to say that?

I would believe that it must go to the first owner and then to you. As for second hand vehicles, it is age and the state that you are living in that make the rules. In CT, they don't title vehicles over 10 years. In MA, they title everything now, and 15 years ago, they knew nothing about titles. Every state makes its own rules as to how they will deal with older vehicle and titles. A friend told me that in Nevada, there are no titles to cars. I don't know if this is still true, but it was 10 years ago when he lived there. Since CT doesn't issue titles for vehicles over 10 years, I have transfered the titles for my old cars into my name in the states where they were originally from if that state will do so. If not, I just keep them and register the cars with a bill of sale and the previous owners registration certificate as proof of ownership before the sale to me.

I purchased a new Kubota a year ago and never got a title. I had to register it to go down the road about 1000' to get to my other property. I called the dealer the told me they have to notify Kubota's office in Texas and I would have it in 7-10 days. Sure enough on the tenth day it was in my mailbox. The dealer does not issue titles when you purchase a machine only if you inform them you are going to register it.

My dealer did not offer...but when I was shopping two years ago and I inquired about getting a title for the tractor, the owner of the dealership said that they rarely title tractors, but that a cirtificate of origin was gotten sometimes...

So I picked up on that info and requested one. On the second tractor I completely forgot about the COO but later asked for it, and after about six (or was it nine?) months it turned up. It was not the dealer's fault. Once in a while I stop by and if I remembered I would ask about the COO. The manager/salesman would say I still have the note, let me call Kubota again while you are here. He would call...get the person's voice mail, and leave all the details again and I would leave wondering if it would ever show up.

Last week (or was it two weeks ago) it was sent to me by the dealer. Was surprised to find it in the mailbox as I had forgotten about it...

JUST curious /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif did u have to register it, just to travel on the road 1000 ft? do they issue plates or what?

Yes I did in Massachusetts if its a farm you are allowed to drive 1/4 mile without plates otherwise you have to register it to drive it on the road. it caost me 122.00 for the plates and 375.00 for insurance.

I didn't get a COO with my purchase. But, I may ask for one, now that I know about it.

I wouldn't take the COO and title it here in California as the local County Government would then know about it and likely issue a personal property tax bill for the tractor. Since the voters cut off the Real Estate property tax grab a bunch of years ago every avenue is exploited by the tax collector.

I got a COO with my tractor, well I should say Harrisburg,Pa. got it because of the loan.

We covered this in other threads but it's something that may be pertinent here as well.
Once a vehicle becomes registered, it's no longer covered on a homeowners or farm policy. This may apply to tractors.

My tractors and "stuff" are listed with my ins. co (State Farm) as being equipment to "maintain the resident premises" and are covered on my homeowners against theft, fire...
PA now requires ATV's and UTV's to be registered, titled (with plates). Once that happened, my RTV and the ATV I had listed as also to "maintain the resident premises" was no longer valid and not covered against theft, fire... If I put a plate on my tractor, it too would be dropped from homeowners and I would need to get a separate policy.

My Certificate of Origin arrived a couple of days ago. Took about 14 days to go from asking to receiving. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Mine came last week, a month after I made the purchase and it came unsolicited. Somewhat surprising considering I had to beg the dealer for the owners manual which arrived 2.5 weeks after purchase.

PA now requires plates on ATV's and UTV's .

Why would you need license plates to operate these on your own private land,
What purpose does this serve?

What next state police & the county sheriff
crusing all over your property and passing out tickets?

I don't believe that they are required when they are used exclusively on you own private land, but would be required when you leave your land and go onto the land of others or the public roads. I know that is how it is done in CT. I know that the people that travel the back woods around my home don't have them registered, but I have also seen them stopped by the State Police and the bikes have been towed away. The drivers are charged with driving unregistered and uninsured vehicles when they get caught. The funny thing is they try to run many times and if there is more than one car in the area, they just wait at both ends of the trail. They know that they have to come out one end or the other.

If the ATV is used solely on your property, it still requires registration. Only exceptions to not have to get registered are for business or farm use only (neither of which applies to me).
So, mine are registered and needed new insurance. I did read more detail and found that liability insurance isn't required if it is solely used on owners property (but still, my ins. co. dropped it off my homeowners).
Here's the press release

ATVs and snowmobiles used only on the owner’s land now require registration. ATV owners will be provided a free, one-time registration with no expiration, and a registration plate to be affixed to the ATV. Snowmobile owners operating on their own lands will receive a free, one-time registration sticker.

What is the purpose of a license plate for this?

Wonder if the Insurance Compaines had a hand in getting such laws passed so they now have an excuse not to insure them ??????

Why a plate for use on your own land?
I don't know... /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Are Insurance companies in on it?
I don't know... /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I've had my RTV for over 6 months now. My insurance company still doesn't know how to insure it.
