Oil & Fuel Cetane Boost

I always run the white jug at .33 oz per gallon in the 790, some times a little more than that in the winter:D

Seems to start quicker, run a little smoother altogether and get a little better mileage as compared to not using power service.

I have too have used amsoil diesel concentrate but, power service is more available, wal-mart, napa, car quest, local fuel depot....

I feel its worth running power service all year with the ulsd.... Like the 10% ethnal 'sp?' junk gas any more, it needs something more to offset the neutering effects the EPA imposed on all fuels. We pay more for a lesser quality of fuel now:confused:

With that being said since we are onto diesel performance....
The only other thing I would like to do a little research on would be getting the injector nozzles tuned with a better spray pattern. You can flow a little more fuel this way at the same timing/pressure and the only result is more power (and maybe a little more smoke at WOT/load). I've seen this provide 5-10% improvement in torque/hp on a dyno without any computer adjustments or fuel pressure changes. Also saw better fuel economy, but that was in a diesel automobile, so not sure if that would be applicable.

I have a torpedo heater that runs on diesel. Would this cetane help with carbon deposits on igniter plug? I never used to have any problems until this year. I have checked all the specs and their right where they belong. I know this is a little off subject but any help would be appreciated.

Cetane is really a measure of the quality and speed of ignition of the diesel fuel. It's one of the measures, but not the only measure. While a higher cetane number can potentially aid in reducing carbon deposits, you would probably also be more interested in something like Diesel Clean from PS as it's designed to clean injectors that are dirty. I've also been known to mix in a little Sea Foam but thats a much longer discussion.

Short of it, if you are getting a lot of carbon buildup, try a detergent additive, and also make sure you have good filtration. The cetane may help as well because it sounds like you aren't getting a complete burn.

Cetane rating for diesel fuel is similar to octane rating for gasoline. I doubt increasing the cetane number would help your space heater.

Given the location the igniter, I'm not sure there are any fuel additives that will effectively burn off that buildup. If yours is like mine, the igniter is positioned in front of the nozzle. Turning on the switch starts the pump and sparks the igniter at approximately the same time. Assuming your igniter is fixed in the spray pattern (and therefore the flame), it should be reasonably self-cleaning. Carbonization suggests dirty fuel. Alternatively, the igniter location might have to be adjusted to rest in a hotter part of the flame.

If perhaps you have a design that moves the igniter out of the spray pattern after ignition, it might have to be adjusted to rest farther away from the flame. Either way, I think I'd open it up so see what's what. The think will probably need cleaning anyway.

Higher Cetane number (40 is the minimum standard in the US, any more than 55 is a waste of additive) = more spontaneous combustion ability of diesel.

Higher Octane number = Lower spontaneous combustion ability of gasoline. Higher octane fuel reduces knocking in a gasoline engine (knocking is detonation before Top Dead Center piston position), hence why sports cars and higher compression engines require a higher octane fuel to prevent pre-det.
