Chain guard questions

I need chain guards for my 5' King Kutter rotary cutter. I'm reluctant to increase my investment by 30%-40% by purchasing the front and rear set from King Kutter. I think I'm just going to make some myself but I had some questions about doing so.

First, what size and type of chain should I use (keeping in mind that price is a concern) for this? Second, just how long should I make the chains (better put, how far down from the underside of the mower deck should these hang)?

Lastly, is there anything else you can tell me that I should consider or of which I should be aware before I undertake this endeavor? Thanks! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Do a search for chain guards in the do it yourself forum. One of the forum members showed how he did it and has pictures too.

Thanks for the link. That had the answer I needed. He used 3/16" chain and cut it to seven link lengths. His is welded to some angle iron extended out from the deck edge so he has closer to six hanging below the level of the underside of the deck.

I was talking about this to a guy who works for me and he thinks we have 8' or so of flat bar stock with some holes in it. If I can get lucky enough that the holes will allow me to put a link through them and are close enough together for my purpose then I can do that and run a rod through the top link and let the chain hang down like Woods does (and probably others do) on their chain guards. Failing that, I'll go the welding route. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I wish I could remember who it was, but someone posted some pictures of a chain guard that he made that bolted/screwed onto the deck. As I recall, each length of chain was also bolted/screwed on individually, so that replacements could be easily mounted. I've searched for it but haven't found it yet. If I do, I'll send you a link.

I'm the one that submitted the KK welded chain guards.
They work really well and haven't shown any wear. I use it a lot. The pics in the link pretty much explain what I did, feel free to email with questions if I can help you out. Did the whole thing for less than $40 I would guess. Easy to grind one off if it did need replacing.
