The chain link fence will probably work fine. I seeded a few acres of lawn and grass waterway using only a 6'x8' piece of used chainlink fence for a drag. I did drag it with an old springtooth after disking but that isn't a must. I screwed on a 2x4 and a rope tied it to the drawbar of the tractor. Tossed on a log for weight and it worked great.
Then I spread the grass seed and fertilizer, and dragged it again without the top weight.
It came up better than I could have hoped!

Here is a picture of one I built for $10...... I bought a 20' section of used chainlink fencing (6' wide) and wrapped the fencing around a log and then let about 10' drag behind. Works REALLY well! Apologies for the pic quality - I was using my cellphone camera.

Being one who prefers to recycle rather than spend lots, I made my own. When your neighbourhood has a "bring out your dead" verge collection, look for steel frame bed bases. I have two of these bolted together and tow them around. If you need more weight just weld some brackets to suit what ever you are using on top.

I built my dirt drag pretty cheap, I used horse panel welded to 1" sq tubing frame with a piece of chain to hook up to, it works pretty good.
How do you lift it and turn it around when you get to the end so you can go back the other way?;)

do you put any weights on the back to weigh it down?

I bought a 6 ft tall gate for chain link fences at HD for cheap. Put some old dumbell weights on it, works great. Just tie rope or chain to the tubular frame.

Prior planning! (you don't lift, just keep dragging!)

how did you keep the fence to stay down when you were dragging?
