I have been thinking of making a drag that I can pick up with my three point hitch. After looking at a lot of differnt styles I found one on youtube that is very close to what I have been thinking about. I was thinking of using heavy chain link or something similar for the part that drags. What I am looking to do is to spread out the manure in my pasture and to smooth out where I box blade.

I have drag harrow without the 3 point hitch pickup. I pick it up with front bucket. Oops I popped a headlight moving it that way. A few hundred to fix that and still wainting to fix the headlight. Now I wish I had made a frame to move it from the 3ph.

I made this 3pt harrow for $250 and it would work well for spreading the piles in a pasture.

Chain harrows work well for manure piles. You can get an inexpensive boom pole and some chain and make a harness to lift it.
I sometimes add a weight, a tire from a semi, if the piles need a little more force.

Thanks for the pics, I really like your harrow. Now that I have been reading more I want a chain harrow and one with spikes. I am thinking of making a frame very similar to the one in my link and then making a chain type drag and also a harrow that will be interchangable in the frame. I have some sketches made and will start it as soon as I finish my trailer project.
I have enough material to make everything I think. Today I was given a full 5 gallon bucket of railroad spikes to make the harrow spikes out of.

This is something you might take into account with your design.
It is sometimes helpful with a chain harrow to pull it from one end or the other. The tines are more aggresive one way. Also, flipping it over to use the "flat" side sometimes works better with manure and burying seed that has been broadcast.

I cut my harrow teeth out of 5/8" sucker rod, which is a good metal that resists abrasion.

I'm looking at the 3pt 6ft from this place. Seems like the nicest designed one I've found. I have blacktop to go over before I get to were it's needed so the three point for me is the way to go. Price is high but it's the one that will work best for me.

Their equipment looks to be of good quality to me. I looked at their 3 pt harrow compared to TSC drag harrow and it looked to me like theirs is priced reasonably for what you get.
One of the reasons I want a 3 pt harrow is so I can pick it up and back it into the shed.
Early in my career I made my living as a welder and I still enjoy making a few things, just not all of the time. It also helps that I can get some really good deals on material left over from jobs at work.

Harrowing requires more management to be successful breaking up the parasite cycle. You need to keep the horses off the field for a good 4 weeks, and that requires pretty good sun to heat things up. You also need to drag across the piles several times to reduce the size and distribute it over a significant area.

I decided to buy a cheap used manure spreader, got one for $350 about 5 years ago. So some of the composting takes place before I spread it, which helps interrupt parasite cycle, then it gets distributed in fine pieces over a large area, which also helps kill any kooties that are left.

There was an article in the Feb. 2011 Equus magazine about parasites that I would recommend reading. My wife will not let me spread compost on the pasture even if it has been through a hot summer of decomposing. This is not a link to the article but to the publication.
