I'm getting ready to overseed my pastures with rye (trying to get a little forage for my horses for the winter here in NC). I have a new chain harrow. I was hoping someone on the list might be able to give a few pointers on how best to use the attachment for this purpose.

Any help will be appreciated.

How are you overseeding? With a broadcast spreader? And what are you seeding over? existing grass?

Here in florida, when it starts to get cool, I overseed my existing bahia pasture with rye, via a broadcast spreader on the tractor, and I don't drag it in or anything. The only time I drag seed in is when on preppeed raw ground with no existing vegitation.

that is just my .02... someone else may have more professional experiences.

If you are going to overseed I would run the harrow before you do any seeding. Run it both ways across the ground. Then put your seed down and repeat the process. One time will be sufficient. You just want to throw some dirt over the seeds to encourage germination and discourage the birds eating all of your seeds. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Appreciate the replies. Yes, I'm going to use a broadcast spreader. Running it both ways before and after makes sense. Thanks,

What kind of chain harrow did you purchase and where? I am thinking about one too... But I considered using some chain link fence as an alternative...

I've priced harrows and they seem to run about $275-300 for a 8'wx4'l one without a 3pt lift. Those harrows are made out of really beefy links and tines (maybe 1/2" thick steel), I don't think chain link would be nearly as effective.

I'm going to get one eventually but don't plan on getting the 3 pt lift because of the extra cost and storage space, if i was going to use it all the time or had to transport the harrow a long ways I would consider it though.
