Hello all,
When winter subsides I like to get an attachment that will break up all of the horse manure left in the pasture.
Is a chain harrow the correct attachment for this?

Thanks !

I used a 4x4 chain harrow behind my ATV for this purpose. It works well, but I'm planning on getting a bigger harrow to save time. If you're using you're tractor you could essentially get as big of a harrow as you wanted.

i use what they call a chain or drag harrow... it works GREAT at breaking up the horse poop and loosening up the snow mold so the grass grows better.

I know somebody that calls a chain harrow a turd buster:laughing:

Yep, a chain harrow. I asked a similar question on TBN about a year ago. Quite a few responses on various DIY contraptions: weighted tyres chained together; an old steel gate, again weighed down with tyres; etc...

In the end I went ahead and bought an Aussie manufactured one, two 4x4 sections. The first section has tines and the second one is a heavy mesh. I also use it to groom a horse arena from time to time.

Mind you, all that a chain harrow will do in this situation (manure) is to break up the balls and spread it around a bit. I typically follow up harrowing a paddock with my D110 and mulch the spread-out 'goodness'. :)

A few years ago I bought an 8' x 12' chain harrow from a local farmer. It certainly does the job...and quickly...but is a pain to transport, hook up (sometimes untangle!). I think I would have been better off with a narrower one and just take a bit longer on the job.

Seems like I'm on the right track.
Which ever size I get I was planning on using a 3-pt boom to ease transport and let me raise it to go in reverse if need.

Don't get carried away and get it caught up in the rear wheel. Nasty. I've seen it happen.
