I am thinking of looking for a used (i hope) chain harrow to drag behind a B2410 for the purpose of maintaining a horse field for spreading out the manure and perhaps even overseeding some areas. What size chain harrow is sensible with the B2410? Any hints or tips?

Thanks!

I have mentioned my tine harrow several times. I love the thing--it is very useful and will do nicely for what you mention and other things too. I bought it for my BX orginally and was told 5 hosepower per foot but I dcecided to get the 6 wide foot by 8 foot long and it is just right for the BX and a good size for the 2410 also but you could get the 8 footer. I like the 6 because I can "slalom" in and out and around trees and things easily. Furest flexible tine harrow is what you want--not cheap but very nice quality.

I have one of these harrows also and love it. Mine is 4 foot wide and 7 foot long. The reason for the 4 foot wide is it was what the dealer had and had a good price on it. I do wish I had a 5 foot or six foot wides units. They come in four foot widths I believe and you use a new tow bar to add a new width.

Actually they come in 4 foot lengths which can be hooked together, mine is 8 feet--two four foot sections. Width is 4 foot up in 2 foot increments I think. They also have some for garden tractors and ATV's that are much smaller--you would be surprised at how much drag one of these things can produce in some conditions (loam and sand) and in others virtually none (hard drought polished clay)

Mine is 4 foot wide and 7 foot long, even the bigger versions of this harrow are 7 feet long. They do come in four foot widths. I almost bet my wife on it!!! They are still great devices.

TresCrows,

How much did that unit cost you? I'm very interested in purchasing something along these lines, but I'm concerned about how well it'll prepare a seed bed in my hard clay. Think it'll penetrate enough to do this for grass seed? I had considered tilling, but to get a decent powder i'd have to get pretty deep, deeper than necessary for grass, and that would take a lot of time as well.

Maybe yours is a different brand because mine is 6 feet wide, they had a 4 and an 8 at the place I bought it and they had several extra sections in each width for making them longer--each 4 foot additional. Fuerst has a web site that tells about the things. They show sizes from 4 feet to 24 feet in two foot increments (width)
I do not remember what it cost--it was a bunch. I love the thing but hard clay is not it's best use for preparing a seed bed. You may have to till or otherwise break the soil and THEN use the harrow to work it into a seed bed.
I have used mine to prepare freshly spread soil and already worked soil, it makes nice little grooves the seeds fall into for good germination. I also maintain my gravel drive and road and it seems to stimulate the lawn when I use it to drag in fertilizer or top seed and I have no tilled alfalfa with my PTO spreader followed by the tine harrow.

ddl, sorry, I already have one wife, two would be more than I could stand or should even be wished upon any man though I am sure she is a really nice lady--no thanks!
Sorry I am so hard headed--I just want the original poster to get it right which might be best served by his visiting their web site.
I have also seen chain harrows in the Northern catalog and several other places that or similar to mine though I think mine is heavier built than others I have seen.
