Chain Harrow?

Actually I would never give up my wife anyway. My harrow is the same brand as yours and I agree with you about the quality of the harrow, So we don't disagree except I thought the widths were different, but I must be wrong. I I get busier doing seed bed perp. I my buy a another section to have 8 foot wide, still able to roll up the harrow and haul in my bucket of my tractor.

I'm looking at a Fuerst Harrow. Did anyone buy the lift that either Fuerst or other manufacturers sell and if you did, why, and if you knew about it and still did not, why not?

I think it depends on 2 things; (1) Where you will store the harrow and (2) If you have/want to get into corners with the harrow. My sister has an indoor riding ring and wants to get into corners with the harrow. So she lifts the harrow, backs into the corner, lowers the harrow and drives away. She also stores the harrow in a place she has to back into. I, on the other hand, have no need to get into corners and the place I store it, I can drive forward into, unhitch the harrow and drive off. No need for backing up.

Also, if you have animals, take care where you store the chain harrow. If an animal were to step into it and get tangled, there could be an aweful mess. /w3tcompact/icons/sad.gif

I'm wondering if I can accomplish the same kind of results,(preparing my eaten down fields for overseeding) if I use my york rake to scrape up the surface b4 I seed??? Any thoughts?
Thanks

Mine does not have the 3-point. Sometimes I think I will get it so that it does not drag during transport to the work site. One thing though, as it is now, when I am done using it, I just fold it up so it takes up little room. When it was shipped to me it came looking like a giant ball--rolled up into a ball. I have never figured out exactly how to do that again but I do fold it up.

Works for me. Did you have a soil test done?

Yes I did Mike.. end of last year. I've spread some cow and horse poop all around, plus had it limed too...But the animals really ate the heck out of it last year, plus the hot weather here in NJ,didn't help much either. So I think in a few weeks I will try and frost seed with pasture mix. But since it's been decent weather, I'd like to try scuffing up the fields before I seed.. Good idea???

The drag harrow sounds like a good idea. Harrow, seed then harrow to cover it.

SOB -

that's the best - rough up the area, spread the seed, and till it in. I had a few areas that were badly overgrazed in the past - and this worked well for me.

By virtue of poor planning on my part (and a lack of a beeter way anyhow) I have a wheelchair path between the arena and one of the pastures, the tine harrow digs it up when I cross. One of the lifts sounds handy, plus for getting it into sotrage area easier. One more reason to hurry up and by something bigger than my MF2925.

I think the main advantage of the liftable version is that it lets you clean
out the thatch, sticks and other debris easily. When I clean up rough
pastures I lift the harrow along a windrow so I can clean up easily.

I don't know how you clean out a drag-only model.

The harrow becomes ineffective once it gets clogged with debris.

Maybe it has to do with how good your pastures are. I'll be my
neighbor could run a harrow in her pasture all day without it getting
gummed up much.
