I bought this from a lawnmower repair shop in Irving several years ago, gave about $20 for it as I recall. You get stones in whatever size you need for your chain, it hooks to 12volt battery, and your in business. It has a metal bit in it now, but it comes in handy for touching up blade in field. It is an Oregon brand.

I have one of these sharpeners also I think it was about 30.00 or so new. The nice thing about it is that you can just hook it up to your car battery and start sharpening with it. It works pretty well and the stones are very cheap.

Dremel makes a nice little kit for sharpening chains. It fits on their tool. It's an angle guide and a sharpening bit (stone) that fits the size of the teeth.

I think I got mine at Lowes.

Mega ditto on that. I use the same attachment on my Dremel tool and it works great. Couple of grinders costs about $4. The only problem I have is my Dremel is AC powered so I have to sharpen my saw before I venture out. The remedy to that is buying a battery powered Dremel tool. The attachment is very compact and take hardly any room to carry around.

Yep I just use the elcheapo Oregon file with the guide on top. About $7 or so about 15 min to sharpen while sitting and resting. Works anywhere. About once a year I put a new $.50 file in it.
I just take the same amount of strokes on each tooth. 4-7 depending on how dull I let the chain get.
I also get about twice as many sharpenings on a chain as my friend who has a power sharpener does. So I buy 1/2 as many chains as he does :)

Ben

Yep, that's how I do it. Just like Timber except using the guide that you put the file in. Can't remember what I paid for my guide. It has guide marks stamped into it telling you what angle to run the file at. Same as you, strokes depend on how dull the chain is. I lose track of how many sharpenings I get out of a chain. I'll guess at least 15.

I first bought a clamp on adjustable guide. It lays in the drawer now. Like Timber, I can sharpen my chain in about three minutes depending on how dull and not remove it from the saw. As I get older I look more forward to the physical break I get by stopping and tailgate sharpening my saw!!! Most of the time it is done in conjunction with a refuel stop. :D

The sharpeners from Homier and HF are the same, and they wok well. The one from Homier is $10 cheaper. These are useable in the field with a cheap AC inverter hooked to your 12VDC vehicle.

I'm another user of a Dremel tool for sharpening my chain saw teeth, does them slick and quick. I also use it for touching up my Bush Hog blades.

My FIL has one just like it, he can ruin a chain in a hurry with it :)

Yep they are handy if you use em right though.

I found a little diamond grinder that has a guide, regulates depth automagically, and chucks right up in my battery powered Dremel. Costs a bit more'n the stones but lasts a whole season.
