I've got a JD X324 and was thinking about chaining it up this winter to haul around a little sand for the driveway. First of all, the local dealer wants $80 for a set of JD chains (just the rears). I live on a steep hill, with frequent icy conditions and I keep my L3830 chained all the way around all winter for plowing. WIll chains on the front of the little 4-whell steer hurt it? thx

With out rotational movement (front drive), the chains will actually hinder steering. Your best bet would be to add weight to the front.

I think the hint about just adding weight to the front is on the money. Then with the chains on the rears the 4WS should give you good steering action and control on the icy hill provided you are not going to fast to slide the front end of the tractor. Front chains certainly would not hurt anything, but in your case for hauling sand I don't think they would help enough to be worth buying and mounting either.
