Get 5/16 chain and use 3/8 binders. That way, if you ever need to secure more weight you just need heavier chain.

As 45/70Man mentioned, be careful using the 3/8"-1/2" binders as they can slip on a 5/16" chain. I have one 3/8"-1/2" binder, not sure how I ended up with it but I have had it for 40 to 45 years, and I only use it if I have to due to the possibility of it slipping, which it has done.

Related question:
When are chains, straps, tie downs required?
Is there a weight limit on what loads in a truck or trailer need tie-downs and what doesn't?

Does a garden tractor in a pickup bed need tie-downs?
Garden tractor in a (~dump) trailer with side rails (equivalent to a pick-up box)?
A SCUT in trailer with side rails.

The reason I ask, is I followed a local John Deere dealer from Hudson Falls to 3 towns over with a SCUT in a trailer with <2' side rails. Tractor didn't have a single strap or chain on it. Local reputation is he rips a lot of people off, but is he endangering them too?

Laws likely vary by state, I would tie down the machine in both scenarios. Even the garden tractor with momentum could crash through the pickup tailgate. The dealer transporting the SCUT unsecured is being lazy and foolhardy. I would not want to have to live with the knowledge that my poor choice cost someone's life.

Everything is required to be secured even a bag of dog food. Two straps or chains are legally good for things up to 10,000lbs over that you need four. Pickup sides, side rails, dump beds etc make no difference. Most cops will use some common sense enforcing the law but per the law even little things should be strapped down in a pickup bed.

Legal requirements is a WLL of at least half the actual load weight. You only need 2,500 lbs of securement. Four 1k ratchet straps is more than adequate.

Grade 70 1/4 chain has a WLL of 3,150. Two 1/4 G70 chains would be much more than your entire load.

I prefer to have more securement than required and only like having to run as few individual pieces as possible, for the most options.

I have (5) 5/16" chain and 3/8" binders for my 7,700 lb. Kubota L48 TLB.
I use (4) 2" ratchet straps for my smaller Ford 1920 FEL.
I love ratchet straps.

I have 20 or more 2” ratchet straps that I use all the time. But I usually use chains on equipment. It’s more work to hook a strap to not cut them vs just using a chain. I ruin a few straps a year ago I found them in sale for $7.50 is why I have so many.

The legal requirement for two up to 10,000 and four from 10,000 and over us for vehicles and machinery, not other loads. Their securement is outlines elsewhere.

I stop a lot of people for improper securement. Mowers and ATV’s, are especially problematic.

Straps may be legal but I've witnessed countless of tractors being hauled around here in different configurations.
This machines bounce. Straps will give and stretch. I cringe whenever I see machines bounce with chains much less straps.
