chains on the PTO shield - yes or no?

I think the most important thing here that no one mentioned, is stay away from the PTO shaft until it has completly stopped rotating. I can see the shields being an issue on something like a posthole digger, a chipper/shredder, etc. where you have to work in close proximity to the shaft, but on a brush hog, there is no reason to be around the shaft while it is turning.

Thanks for all the responses. My shields do have grease fittings, so I'll make sure I keep them greased. Every time I hook up the implement, I'll make sure the shield turns freely. I'll just make it a habit, like wearing a seat belt. One advantage to the plastic ones is that they are quieter. I can still hear the rattling in my head from our old bush hog we had on the farm.

PTO shafts are modular you can buy all the parts separately. That includes the nylon shield bearings. Somebody thinks that shields should not spin so since I don't know any better I use the chains and grease the bearings.

A bud brought a copy of "Lancaster Farming News" along to work so I could scan the classifieds. There was a picture of a guy who will be giving farm safety talks in the area. You guessed it - he has a hook for a right hand. He came in contact with a rotating shield that was frozen to the shaft............chim
