Not always. They were separate companies with different models until Electrolux bought them both at the end of the 70s.

Different companies, hum, did not know that, would you say both chainsaw companies got vacuumed up, a little history lesson.

Since we're down on memory lane, I thought I would look up my first date with orange, going back late 70s Husqvarna L65, boy have they come a long ways, found a couple vids on youtube just like the one I use to have, and it was my first saw that got wiped out by a big tree when the saw got pinch cutting it down, it went into peices, from that time on, allway leave a hinge on the stumps>> Husqvarna 65 L Vintage Chainsaw - YouTube

Mr. See owned a saw. And Mr. Soar owned a seesaw. Now See's saw sawed Soar's seesaw before Soar saw See, which made Soar sore. Had Soar seen See's saw before See sawed Soar's seesaw, See's saw would not have sawed Soar's seesaw. So See's saw sawed Soar's seesaw. But it was sad to see Soar so sore just because See's saw sawed Soar's seesaw!

What brand was See's saw?

It seemed to cut pretty good. What kind of power does it make?

That depends on how much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood.

I have a neighbor that bought a cheap saw and cuts limbs with it when they fall. Then when a tree fell last year he wanted to borrow one of my saws because his saw wasn't up to it. I wish he'd just spend the money and get a good saw. Same with everything else with this guy. He is cheap, really cheap.

No chance. I don't loan my saws. My brother in law and I were doing some landscaping together years ago. he borrowed my cheap 14 inch popular saw and started one handing it....freaked me out. Then his wife told him to dig her a trench...and sure enough, He just dug an 8 inch trench with the saw. Needless to say I had to get a new bar and chain afterwards.... There is only one person I know who I would loan my saw to....anyone else who asks gets the same answer. "I run pro saws with aggressive chains" And I don't loan them out. That Poulan has long since kicked the bucket... If they need something small done and i can manage the time, I will do it for them. If not, they are on their own.

Some people just want a reliable saw. I've never ran one but unless someone is cheap, super cheap they can get a quality made saw. Maybe not the best performer but people must like it if it sells.

Agree that its all marketing. IF all someone wants is a good reliable saw.....there are FAR better options in that price range. The MS290/291 is very OVERWEIGHT and very UNDERPOWERED. IMO, stihl took advantage of that "farmboss" logo. Farmboss used to be a pretty decent saw. Better than a homeowner, but not quite a pro-grade saw. Perfect for the farmer clearing fence rows, etc. Because of the name "farmboss" and what it ment....stihl started getting cheaper and cheaper with it. And they could get away with it because of the reputation they had surrounding "farmboss".

Someone switching from a box-store saw like a craftsman or poulan......think they are getting a quality, good running, good preforming stihl saw. And with nothing to compae to other than poulan/craftsman stuff, they are none-the-wiser. But that couldnt be further from the truth.

The 291 is nothing like the 290. Please check your info before saying their the same weight etc. Not even close. ;)
No not a stihl lover either, just hate wrong info being spread.

Power listed the same....the 291 lists 3/4# lighter. So I stand corrected.

Just assumed the 291 was a slight facelift and more EPA stuff vs the 290.

I cannot recall now weather it was the 290 or 291 that I tested. Was not impressed. Cut more like a 3 HP saw instead of pushing 4 HP. And heft in the hand felt closer to a 5 HP saw. So my conclusion was bulk / weight of a 5hp but performance of a 3hp. Not impressed.
