I had a totally different vision.

Friend of mine had a Doberman years ago. You could grab a 2x4 and tease that dog with it getting him to play by biting on it and playing tug of war. When you got tired he would drag it away. He would chew on it until he had chewed it in two. He'd come back with wood splinters hanging out of his mouth. Was the darnedest thing I ever saw an animal do. Mike would have to hold him down and pull the splinters out of his gums and lips........ Man that dog was stupid......

Maybe stupid, but may more determined, competitive, than self preserving. For the dog, it probably was a contest, test of dominance, tug of wars usually are. Seems like if you end up with the board, proof being you’ve chew it in two, that makes the dog the winner.

I handed the nieghbor's dog a 2" thick x 4' long stick. The dog proceeded to run away, turn around and run right past me, whacking my shin with the stick!
