is there a minimum HP or does that depend on the wood species? what would the minimum be?

You have to match the HP to how fast you want to cut and how thick the wood is that is being cut. There is no correct answerer.

Thanks for the input. I may be wrong, but from my perspective I have a hard time envisioning my Husquvarna 55 getting through almost any Rip cut on hardwood. Pine probably not as much of an issue. With lots of old oak, walnut and hickory on our property I think and investment in a higher end saw is a must.

I lost a 28" shagbark Hickory over July 4th. I have a few sections 12 to 18' long. Was everything I could do just to cross cut the thing with my 20" saw. I finally ended up renting a 29" saw. I would like to Rip some pieces here but it seems to me that Hickory is more like granite than wood. Anyone have experience??? Does a rip blade make a big difference????

Ripping chain makes a difference. Also grinder sharpened chain after every second pass.

There are narrow kerf bars and ripping chains available for them.

Bailey's - 20" ArborPro Narrow Kerf Bar & Chain Combo

With some modification, these can fit for instance Husqvarna a it also helps cut faster. But alas, there is no replacement for displacement:(

I have a Logosol M5 mill, I love it . The pictures are from last winter, this was when I was cutting beams for my up coming barn project. Oh a BIG Saw + a sharp chain = good lumber
