I am thinking of changing the ignition coils on my 2185 due to a persistent stalling problem in hot weather. I have tried all the simpler fixes. Changed fuel pump. checked for vapor locks, replaced fuel hoses and filter etc. Coils seem to be the only thing left to try.

Looks like a miserable job to do. Has anyone here done it and if so is it possible without pulling the motor. Everything seems pretty inaccessible at the back of the engine. Your help would be appreciated.

Thanks RCBE.

Looks like that is the right manual for my engine. I'm still wondering, though, if it is possible to change those coils without pulling the motor.

Changing the coils should be pretty straightforward. It is in getting to them that I anticipate problems.

How I wish Cub could just put some kind of access plates in that engine shroud.

Well, you might consider buying a service manual for that tractor series from MTD.. I think they run around 40 bucks - but I can't tell how much detailed info might be included that would interest you.
Mebbe someone here that has done similar work on that engine can chime in...

Thanks for all the info.

Just pulled the motor today. It really wasn't so hard and is a good opportunity to clean it thoroughly. I'll replace both coils now. No point replacing one and having the other one quit after it is all re-assembled.

Is there evidence of overheating?? This would cause your coil failure and other enginge trouble as well.. Inspect your cold air intakes adn look around for telltale signs of blocked cooling passages.. If they are then disassemble and clean the blockages to make engine cooling more efficient.. Just a thought..
