I'm going to change the right front outer drive shaft seal. 2 Questions first.

1. I have the part. Apparently, the direction the seal is installed has changed. However the data sheet included with the part is in Japanese. a. does anyone here read Japanese or b. Can someone clear this up for me? I'd hate to install a $35 part backward and have to make it it a $70 part!

2. It appears, from the service manual, that once you remove the King pin bolt Part #19 and the steering arm, the reduction gear housing #10 will drop out. How much of a pain is it to get the shaft #11 to line back up when reinstalling?

Thanks in advance.

Sorry I don't read Japaneese. Could you post a pic of the seal. You can usually tell by looking at it. Is it a grease seal or an oil seal. Where are you getting the # you are refering to.

Lip to lube.

The seal is supposed to hold Lube Oil in the wheel gear compartment. The differential shaft seems to be a separate compartment.
Looking closer at it, I think the captions with Arrows on the top are the Japanese versions of the text on the bottom. I'm still not sure it the metal side goes up or down.

See attachment.

It says to mount the iron sheet side facing the muddy water side. In other words, the metal side faces out.

You install a grease seal with the metal cup facing the grease?

A lot of grease seals are installed so the grease can push out through the seal. They are more to keep dirt out than grease in. If you have the lip facing the grease and pump it full of grease you can push the whole seal out.

So the flat metal part would go up assuming the Gear oil is toward the bottom. I guess that makes sense. I just wanted to bounce it off the experts before I did the work. The cutaway is less than helpful.

It looks pretty straight forward. It took me a while to figure out what holds the whole assembly together. Three cups of coffee and the I&T manual.
