char lynn motor question

have a char lynn 2000 series motor 104-1063 with 1 1/4" keyed shaft. Its missing the key.... is it a standard key stock or do i need to go through Eaton/char lynn? never dealt with this and need a little help... thanks!

I'm not a machinest but pretty sure that "keystock" is pretty std in size. I think it comes in about 12" legnths, just cut it to legnth. An industrial supply or maybe even a good auto parts store can get you a pc. Grainger & prolly fastenal will surely have it. Measure real carefully or bring your motor along for a good snug fit.

If you look closely at the shaft, you'll see that the key doesn't go clear to either end of the shaft - that's because that particular motor (and several others) use what's called a Woodruff key, sometimes known as a "half moon" key -

The shaft is NOT grooved full length for a Woodruff key, instead a circular milling cutter is lowered onto the shaft in one place, making a half-moon shaped POCKET into which the key is placed before sliding the pulley or gear onto the shaft over the key, which sticks up from its pocket.

The gear or pulley IS grooved full length of the bore, and usually a set screw is run through the pulley/gear directly in line with the keyway, so when the set screw is tightened it locks shaft, key and gear/pulley all together and bottoms out the key in its pocket.

I couldn't find specs on that particular motor, but usually there are several standard size keys depending on shaft size, etc -

Rusty steered you right on possible sources, but it'd help to have a manual for the mower - might give you more info on which key material, etc... Steve

Don't go that route.Those keys cost pennies.
Any machine shop, many auto parts will stuck them.
Probably can get an assorted kit on EBay

I need to incorporate a shear bolt in my driveline and that might be a decent place to do it...

I 2nd what PILOON says: don't drill it. The shaft is prob hard steel, too, so it will be hard to drill.

That said, many applications that use hyd motors will use a relief valve as a safety, instead of
a shear bolt. The latter is used more for PTO apps. What is yours?

If I am out of key stock, I have used new 1/4" steel lathe cutting tools, which work great.
