1983 Treefarmer-log skidder
Iam going to install a steering valve on my log skidder and do away with the stick steering. My question the tractor weighs 12 tons it has 24.5 x 32 tires and on eather side of the articulation there is one on each side a four inch cylinder with a 18 inch stroke. Will a Char-Lynn steering valve with a Displ. of 17.9 work and how many turns of the wheel will it take to hit the stop point ? Ive been thinking on this project for a number of months. I built a 6 gallion hydraulic tank and wonder if that will be big enough to keep from getting the fluid to hot. And mounted a hyd. pump and will run it off a belt but like all equipment theres very little room to put anything under the hood. As far as the pump goes Iam not real sure on the gallion per minuite flow, but use to have it mounted on a truck and run a Prientce 110 log loader. Iam a new guy from Western Ohio and would like any help I could get on this project. Thanks Bill

I tried to post on the new member but seem to have a problem with my computer. I live in West Central Ohio I come from a farming back ground. Worked as a electrical lineman for thirty years and at the same time ran a sawmill logging operation. Pushing 69 years old and still cut timber, skid, and truck to sawmills in Ohio and Indiana. The olny tractors I have are Log Skidders so if I don't post much it will be because of my old computer and my lack of farm tractors :) Thank you for this site, seems pretty interesting and I deal with some of your sponsors

Logger2,
How are the steering cylinders connected? Are they connected with one cap end & one rod end connected together?

If just filling cap end to extend a single cylinder it would take approx. 12.7 turns of the wheel to go from full left to full right.

If filling both one cap end and one rod end I would estimate around 20 turns lock to lock.

One cylinder would be pushing the rod while the othere side would be pulling the rod in. Twelve turns just won't work, I was planning on getting the steering valve from Surplus Center would any of there steering valves get me down to four turns or less ? Thanks for helping me out.
