this could have its own thread....

egon in australia it is not legal to posses hazardous-explosives of a weight over 30 grams without permits (pay up for the permit), transporting any explosives without (another) permit is illegal, it is illegal to store explosives without yet another permit, it is illegal to buy or sell, use explosives without a license

so yes it is legal to make explosives like gunpowder, but you cant make more than 30 grams, cant move it, cant do anything with it cant even store it

Hello Pickstock, I burn the material that is to be charcoal (the direct method).
There are many variations ( indirect method ) like Desertmikes's which cook the wood in a container. All have their merits but I like the direct method.

Why doesn't the wood burn up ? The oxygen/air for the flame is supplied from below and anything (charcoal) above the downward progressing fire line is
protected by steam and gasses. Until it reaches the bottom, Some people can tell by the change in colour of the smoke when to seal it up as did the old timers. I don't see it as any biggie, if its not all converted put the odd bits in the next burn, If you overcook it, you end up with less charcoal and some ash.

Whatever you do don't waste time and energy burning green or wet product.

Like I said I use dry hardwood and a burn for me is 3 hrs, you would have to experiment for other materials.

I hope this is helpfull, I will be happy to answer any further questions should you have some.

Regards Vince Smith.

youve given me enough info
now to try and set somthing up, i have 2 plans
one for indirect burning, on the house fire in a Milo tin (for the places that have milo) im a bit worried that it wont be hot enough but its worth a shot and will be easy, wont produce much but if i can do it every night then it will make enough for the garden atleast

the other idea is in an old bread crop and will be direct burn, fill it up with a steel tube from top to bottom and a lid over the whole lot
when i get around to it i will post some pics

in ww2 charcoal was somehow used as a fuel to power motor cars due to petrol shortages/rationing, i have seen pics of cars with a big barrel-like module attached to their bonnets but i dont understand how the process actually worked. my great-uncles made a living out in the forests making eucalyptus wood into charcoal in big kilns to sell to motorists.

wood gasification? there are a lot of websites out there that show how to convert a truck to run onit.

yeah im pretty sure your talking wood gassifiaction
basically getting charcoal to the stage that it forms a gas and that is pumped into the engine

solids dont burn, only gasses do

Hello Pickstock, I didn't want to show my ignorance but curiosity has got the better of me what is "an old bread crop "

You will no doubt have some holes in your Milo tin.

Pictures, yes that would be good.

I'm guessing your in West Australia.

back in the 80s my mum went through a pottery phase, way before i was thought about. She made a couple of what i know as bread crops, basically a big fired clay pot that originally had bread in it. almost like a huge crucible for forging.

yeah i will have to have a couple of holes in the tin, but i want to put one way valves (i have some here that i made for low pressure air) in the top so air gets out as it is heated but not in until it starts to cool and i take the top off

im going to have to collect some wood (after i move some cars around) and start having a fire at night the jumper and vest just dont cut it

im from south australia
