Ok so my MF1010 has not ever really charged since I have owned it, 6 years. I have just kept putting off repairs by keeping the battery on a trickle charger. Bad I know, but charging systems have always been my achilles heel.

So I finally dove into it. The generator is ok, the voltage regulator is bad, but the red wire (14 ga) that runs from the regulator to the ign switch, and to the starter solenoid was fried. Have not pulled the wire off completely, but will soon. I also have a new regulator on order.

My main concern, is what fried the wire? If the regulator went bad would that alone do it or do I possibly have something else I need to look for?

Can you see any where on the wire that may have shorted to ground? Pinched? Rubbed? Cut insulation?

Hard to tell because in places all there is are bits of red insulation. Most of the wire itself is gone.

Lol thats basically what I did. Just replaced it today. Looked in the service manual and found it runs to the center pole of the ign switch. I replaced the wire with new 14 ga, so will see what happens. Still waiting on new regulator.

I also diagnosed the tachometer, broken cable. Big problem is finding a new or even used one. No such luck. Its short, only about 21-22" and the drive end is round with one side "pinched" to connect to the drive gears.

I found one at a web site but is is listed as a John Deer 1010 cable. The drive end looks like mine, but I have no idea what size the threaded caps are for either cable. I sent them an email, but am sure I won't hear back before Monday. I also pulled the tach itself, as it was pretty still. Sprayed some WD40 in there to loosen it up and that seems to have worked. No idea if itvwas a good idea or not but I did it.

At least I do not need either part to run the tractor.

Also discovered the left brake basically does nothing. Adjustment made no difference. Could not find any new shoes, so will see if anyone here redoes brake linings.

Instead of trying replacement cable by tractor manufacturer/part number look to aftermarket speedometer/cable repair, probably have new custom inner cable made for less than "manufactures "parts" cable...

Re the burned wire - I'd stick an inline fuse or circuit breaker in the circuit to prevent a recurrence.

The housing was rotten at the section that ran next to the exhaust manifold

Actually resettable circuit breaker.... With a fuse it will blow when you have no spare on tractor and nearest one is at the absolute other end of property....

Whatever - my point was to protect the wire from burning up if a fault occurred again.
