I just saw Lowes selling treated landscape timbers here for $1.97. I had them throw an enire pallet on my trailer for this price. Work better than any cedar posts I had used in the past. These are 3x5 8' posts with 2`flat sides.
Put them in the ground wide sides out. I have some that have been in the ground for 20+ years. None have ever rotted. Use them for brace posts, too. Yes they are $4.97 at HD.

I use bad language everytime there is strong wind blowing in our are. The PO built 10 feet tall fence from boards and all it supports is landscaping lumber. The fence is 20 years old and wind always takes a part of it and tosses it backwards. I am slowly replacing fallen pieces with 4x6 posts.

A drive through the country here on the NW coast after a 90 mph winter storm will tell you why not to use a 4X4 PT as a post in a rail fence. I work in the building material industry, and history has shown that when a piece of wood has been kiln dried, then treated, it loses considerable shear strength. It becomes brittle enough to often break just by dropping it. My opinion is to use a 4X6 minimum for a post. 6X6 is even better, unless you like diggin' post holes in the winter better than I do. Ideal corner and gate posts are used railroad ties. They are about the only posts that stay up on my farm when the resident herd of about 50 elk get spooked.
