Cheap fertilizer?

Use the chick poop WITH the liltter or it may burn whatever WAS growing out there, even better is composted with some cow or horse, which also will get rid of any weed seeds that the chickens missed. Takes longer to build up the soils for growing but the result is also better and longer lasting. Sheep and goat is ok but the pellets seem to take longer to break up. Composted stuff also should smell very little and nothing at all after a little rain. IMHO

People aren't saying that the fertilizer will hurt your yard without a soil test, just saying a soil test will tell you if you need lime and what blend of fertilizer, i.e., how much N, P, and K is needed. If you need lime and spend money on fertlizer without applying the lime, you are wasting your money. A soil test is a cheap way of doing it right.

I don't think you are going to find any cheap fertillizer these days.

For grass, especially lawn grass, the usual recommendation is a fertillizer with a 3-1-2 composition such as 15-5-10. If you want to get more sophisticated, you can get a soil test kit from your local extension office or most feed stores carry them. It can take a few weeks to get the results, depending on their work load.

Having said all that, for years I used 8-8-8 or 13-13-13 on my yard with no ill effects and I could also use that on my vegetable garden where it's better than 3-1-2. It just saved me having 2 different fertillizers around.

I have just under 5 acres of pasture and based on my soil test which consisted of 5 samples (total cost 25.00) I had to spread 950lbs of fert. which consisted of N and P. As far as lime I needed 8 ton/acre which I am STILL waiting for. It was so much that I schedule them to do it over two months ago, haven't seen it yet. I am currently looking into renting a fertilizer cart and towing it to another dealer with my truck and spreading it myself. I am going to check it out tomorrow morning to see what it has i.e. hitch, pony motor to unload cart into hopper, etc.
