I'm close to finishing building a barn. It has (3) 8' openings in which I would like to put 8' x 7' high overhead doors.

I built the barn cheap (milled my own lumber) and would like to make the doors as cheap as possible also.

Unfortunately, a 8'x7' overhead door in my area runs north of $750 installed with opener.

Any ideas to construct the doors from plywood, say as a single panel door ?

Also, has anyone built an overhead door in such a way that it didn't need springs or torsion rods
to open it ?

I have a quality barn that is hamstrung by low end doors. I fight with them all the time and it sucks.

If I did it again I would figure out which door I would use the most-- and buy the best most high quality unit I could find.

Good luck.

Barn style sliding doors?
Do you have the room for those?
Could even use your own planks.

Any houses being torn down in your area? Greater Vancouver B.C. has lots of then. In 2009 I bought three of them, complete with remote control operators for $100.00 each. They would cost more now, but still cheap if any around.

$304 at Menards.

Install it yourself. I've done two of them. Takes about 1.5 hours. Basic hand tools and a drill. Very easy project. Don't need openers, as they are very lightweight.

Openers add significantly to the overall cost of the project.

Ditto. Install yourself. Easy even with openers.

Openers are very easy. Helps to have one helper, but not necessary at all.
