Kubota L4400 4wd w/LA 703 FEL
I'm probably going to be getting a Kubota L4400 soon. I don't have a shed for it. And after the tractor I don't have much (any) money left over for a shed. But I understand it is best to keep them under something, for resale value if nothing else.

Any advice or general plans for a small shed? I've built my own log cabin so I'm fairly handy, but the emphasis here is CHEAP. I've got some old metal roofing available and I'm thinking about just sinking 4 6x6x10 in the ground and use some 2x6s to go from one 6x6 to the other and then 2x4s across the top for purlins to mount the roofing to. Maybe put some 2x4s down the sides to put some of the roofing metal on the sides as well to block wind blown rain. I'll leave it open at the ends. The 6x6x10 PT posts are about $30 a piece. I figure the rest of the wood to be around $100. The metal is free. I've got screws and nails. The ground is dense clay so I may just sink the posts about 3' and without concrete. Dirt floor of course. That would give me 7' of clearance in the front.

Obviously very basic but it looks like I might could get by for under $300. I could save $120 and cut four big cedars for posts (there are 75 yo cedar post barns around here still standing) but I think the 6x6's would be easier to frame against. Other than that, anyone know of any cheaper way I could do this?

No pun intended but I'd say you "hit the nail on the head".

I did something similar for a storage building but slightly larger. I also put Hardypanel on 3 sides, road cloth and stone for a floor. Mine was 500 sq/ft and fully done (including electric, painting...) I did it for about $4 per sq/ft.

Just kidding, I have a shed like that for my round bale of hay and it went together easy and is plenty strong....

Attached is a picture before I put the tin roof on.....

Ah, was beat to it. A blue Tarp from Wally World works at the rate of one per season. Quick, easy, and fool proof.

I parked my BX under one for the first winter. Same as being inside.

That's it! Add some old use roofing on the sides and top and that's what I'm planning.

No joke, the blue tarp is going to have to suffice for a few weeks.

Funny thing, all the tractors at every dealership I've been to sit right out in the elements day after day.

You could look for a small sawmill operation and buy rough cut post. Larch (Tamerack) wood is very weather resistant.

Or even cheaper you could drop some of your Cedar and have it milled. $ 10 a post ?

Well - go find somebody who has free pallets. Sink your postis in at the corners, put the pallets in between. Use a 2x6 to tie the top of the posts together, and screw the pallets to each other, and to the posts (you can run a 2x4 up between the pallets as well). Be sure to get pallets that are the same width and measure where to put your corner posts AFTER you find out what size pallets you have. Rafters, nailers, tin. Done.

I'm about 3/4 finished with a 24X27 storage building. I tried to do it on the cheap also. Seems like things always end up costing more than planned. I used recycled metal for the sides but will have to buy metal for the roof. I also bought prefabed trusses, one of the major expenses. Also putting on sliding doors and a walkin standard entrance door. It'll end up costing close to $2.5/K by the time everything is said and done. It's amazing how I always seem to have major cost overuns. Shhhhh......don't tell the accountant. She's been eyeballing a new stove.

Hey Cracker, you been spyn' around my place? Or is it just a great minds thing? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

These are 10'x10' shelters for the ponies, but no reason they couldn't be streched a little deeper for a tractor. The front has over 8' of clearance.

Double check the height of the tractor with ROPS up. You can find postings reporting the result of trying to drive a tractor into a garage with a 7' high door.
