Hey guys,
Would you know where perhaps a 1/4" check ball could be from? It was laying next to the transmission filter/screen. Anyone know the paticular area this may be from, within the tranny? Maybe, its possible its actually a part of a bearing? If a bearing had come apart, then there sould be cage material also. I did just buy it. But, It looks as though the filter cover hasn't been off for decades. Just wondering if anyone had the same scenario. Everything is working correctly. Its a 186D 18HP

Thanks for any input...

There are only three 1/4" balls in the 186. All used in the trans. #17 , #11
&, #33 - .
Does it look like the tractor has been apart before?

Hey Thanks! I'll have a look at those places. They look fairly accesible. I'm not sure if its been apart before. Hard to tell as the powertrain has all be repainted(touched-up)

Those are excellent diagrams. As the repair manual I got is a little poor on the copy quality.

Fixed!

Well, it all makes sense now. Its the detent ball for the 3 point lever. I didn't know a three point lever would even have a detent(total tractor noobie, I must confess). As the lever is held center with springs and bungy cords. So, now I know(or at least I think I know) the 3 point lever should have a detent ball #11. Thank you so much for your help Aaron! You put my mind at rest about the ball.

I initially had problems with that detent on my 186D. I couldn't get it to stay in place. I tried bending the arm that holds it on the lift lever as I thought this was the problem but never could get it to stay in place after I reassembled the tractor and cycled it a few times. I shelled out for a new lever and haven't had a problem since. It appears that my tractor had been rolled before I acquired it and I believe the lever must have been damaged slightly during the incident.
