Flow restrictors should eliminate this issue. I recommend putting them on both ports.
A 2" cylinder, would get .031 restrictors.

With weight trying to extend the toplink cylinder oil will leak out of the rod end through the directional valve. This creates an air pocket on cap end of the cylinder since the vacuum will not pull oil through the directional valve.
The check will prevent the oil leaking through the directional valve and should solve the spongy cylinder.
